Looking for a fun way your kids can be involved with creating dog enrichment?

Have a party for stuffing dog Kongs and other shapes! There are so many different rubber dog enrichment toys for licking available. They can also stuff food into silicone molds like ice cube trays and cupcake liners that can be filled and frozen. Then take the food out of the silicone mold and give to your dog outside or on a floor that won’t get ruined by wet food.

Need ideas on safe foods to use?

Here are a few:
➡️ Pumpkin puree
➡️ mashed sweet potato
➡️ non sweetened plain Greek yogurt
➡️ baby food
➡️ vegetable pieces
➡️ dog food
➡️ cheese
➡️ pieces of protein
➡️ cream cheese
➡️ peanut butter (without xylitol – which isn’t used much anymore, still best to check)

I use food all the time when I am training dogs. Dog treats are easy to carry, typically of value to the dog in front of me and allow me to get a lot of repetitions of a behavior to reinforce in a short amount of time. However, there are times when a dog is not motivated by the dog treats meant to be reinforcers (either mine or my clients’).

Why would this happen when a dog is biologically wired to eat to survive? If you have experienced this, here are some reasons why your dog may not be motivated by your dog treats.

➡ There is an underlying medical issue.
➡ Your dog is scared or overly stressed
➡ There are better competing reinforcers available.
➡ Your treats are not that tasty according to your dog’s preferences.
➡ History has taught your dog that tasty food is a trap.
➡ Your dog simply is not hungry.
➡ It could be how you are training. (Maybe, for example, you are pressuring your dog, making the lesson unclear which is causing your dog to check out.)

No matter what, it is always a good idea in dog training to know what your own dog values. Are there certain foods he chooses over others? Are there activities he loves to do? Keep in mind that what your dog values here and now, may not be the same at any other time in any other situation. Listen to what your dog shares in the moment and be open to adjusting what you are doing.

Teaching and learning are always a two-way street. It is important for us, as teachers, to see ourselves as our pet’s coach, security net, and giver of fun. We all want to work harder when we feel seen, heard, and valued. Our pets are no different.

If I had a dollar for every dog parent who tells me his/her/their dog loves looking out the window all day, I would have a lot of money. They often think it is good for their dog to sit at the window and take in the outside world.

Being on window police duty can be a stressful job. Your dog is always waiting for the next sight to bark at. This can lead to your dog experiencing:

CHRONIC STRESS & HYPERVIGILANCE

BARRIER FRUSTRATION

HEIGHTENED NEED FOR AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIORS

HEIGHTENED DESIRE FOR PREDATORY BEHAVIORS

Please don’t feel bad removing your dog’s access to your front windows. When you see the positive impact on your dog’s ability to relax and enjoy other hobbies, you may never want to go back. It is not uncommon for me to hear about this happen every time I have put this in a training plan.

There are so many more productive, therapeutic activities you can offer your dog that will benefit both of you!

Oh this sweet, sweet girl has stolen my heart. I was called to help train her as she has some quirky habits. When I got there and met her I saw these habits are rooted in fear and a lack of confidence. In the beginning she would jump onto the sofa and roll over. She did a lot of rolling over actually, only I saw it as a sign of her needing help. I love how this photo (that I took at the end of my visit) shows her laying upright next to me wagging her tail, relaxed muscles. We took a video of what our meeting looked like and how I supported her…and how her confidence began to show through. I will be posting it soon. I can’t wait to see how her quality of life improves as my recommended changes are implemented!

I love doing my kids classes. It never fails, I always feel so fulfilled after everyone leaves because I know I have taught my students’ valuable information that will help them have stronger relationships with their family dog. I appreciate so much that my students’ parents take the time to bring their child or children. This education is important for them too. This is why I enjoy my community service project so much.

And I appreciate the Billman family for supporting me by bringing my partner, Certified Therapy Dog Murphy.

My next class is November 17. Registration will open soon!

In dog training, how would you describe ‘enthusiasm’?
In one word…I would describe it as…XARA!

I love how she is so focused. Her soft body, alert eyes, and quick responses tell me she is a very enthusiastic learner! And that makes teaching her so much fun!
