In just his first 10 days at the shelter, Shauncey had 4 medication changes. He received 3 different anxiety medications, 3 times a day, and despite every effort being made for him, he was still struggling deeply.
He chewed on the guillotine kennel door so relentlessly that ๐๐ ๐ข๐๐๐ ๐๐๐จ ๐ข๐ค๐ช๐ฉ๐ ๐๐ก๐๐๐. Staff had to remove the door completely to stop him from hurting himself. He even tired to chew through the cement wall instead.
By day 4, Shauncey had already been placed on our intervention list. This list is for dogs whose behavior and quality of life are rapidly declining in the shelter environment. Dogs who may eventually face euthanasia because continuing to deteriorate mentally and emotionally inside a kennel is simply not humane.
And the heartbreaking part isโฆ Shauncey is not a bad dog. He is a baby who cannot cope with shelter life.
He gets multiple daily outings, enrichment, office time, quiet breaks, and training sessions. Nothing changes how overwhelmed he feels in a kennel.
But when Shauncey was in a foster home, everything was different.
His foster described him as sweet, affectionate, playful, and an excellent house guest. He is ๐ฅ๐ค๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฎ ๐ฉ๐ง๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ with zero accidents, ๐๐ง๐๐ฉ๐ ๐ฉ๐ง๐๐๐ฃ๐๐, ๐ง๐๐๐๐จ ๐๐๐ก๐ข๐ก๐ฎ ๐๐ฃ ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐๐๐ง, ๐ฌ๐๐ก๐ ๐จ ๐๐๐ฃ๐ฉ๐ก๐ฎ ๐ค๐ฃ ๐ก๐๐๐จ๐, ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ก๐ค๐ซ๐๐จ ๐๐๐ก๐ก๐ฎ ๐ง๐ช๐๐จ, ๐ฉ๐ค๐ฎ๐จ, ๐ฃ๐๐ฅ๐จ, ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ช๐ง๐ก๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ช๐ฅ ๐๐๐จ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐จ ๐ฅ๐๐ค๐ฅ๐ก๐. He knows โsitโ and โcrate,โ is treat motivated, and did well playing with a resident dog.
Shauncey is only around 7 months old.
Right now, he is staying in our behavior and training office because he ๐ข๐๐ฃ๐ฉ๐๐ก๐ก๐ฎ ๐๐๐ฃ๐ฃ๐ค๐ฉ ๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ก๐ ๐๐๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ฃ ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐ ๐๐ฃ๐ฃ๐๐ก๐จ๐
He ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฃ๐๐๐๐จ ๐ ๐๐ค๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ง ๐ค๐ง ๐๐๐ค๐ฅ๐ฉ๐๐ง to give him the chance the shelter environment cannot. Shauncey would do best in an ๐๐๐ช๐ก๐ฉ ๐ค๐ฃ๐ก๐ฎ ๐๐ค๐ข๐ at this time.
