There’s something especially rewarding about earning the trust of a fearful dog. ❤ When we first met, Holly showed all the body language cues indicative of intense discomfort: frantically barking, retreating, and avoiding interaction at all costs. Her anxiety level was high and even the smallest shift in posture or the subtlest of noises would set her on edge.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve:
Worked with her guardians to come up with a greeting ritual that gives her the space and time she needs to process visitors from a distance.
Helped decrease her daily stress and allowed her to settle into safe spaces and routines.
Been extra careful to watch her body language for the smallest signs of discomfort, and have never pushed for more interaction than she was ready for.
This week, Holly sought out physical affection repeatedly during our session, leaning into Hannah’s hands for petting and even flopping down into her lap. These may seem like little things, but they deserve to be celebrated! Raising an anxious dog can be such an isolating experience. It’s an honor to be invited into Holly’s “inner circle” and get to see the playful, joyful dog her guardians know so well. 🥰
