Wow, just mind-blown still from everything learned with Solange Ellis with Stable Riding at our intensive last weekend! πŸ€―πŸ™Œ

The way Solange looks at each rider and horse individually, and instructs to bring everything together in YOUR body is AMAZING! πŸ₯³πŸŽ

I've never felt more stable riding the walk, trot, canter, and jumping! Sitting spooks and such on the trail- way less intimidating. And my husband made sense of way more things in the saddle, too πŸ€ πŸ‘ŒThanks, Solange!!

Does your horse respond to your cues with brace and resistance, like your horse became a brick wall? 🧱

Do you feel like you have to be a body builder to move your horse with more and more leg? πŸ’ͺ

Look at the focus on feel and timing by this girl! πŸ’• She was having trouble getting her horse to flow with her into the turns during their last ride.

I said, "Let's see what your horse's reaction is to moving her hindquarters around with your hand and the stirrup on the ground."

The reaction was brace, brace, brace and little movement- the same reaction as she did to her leg and heel cue while riding.πŸ˜•

So we broke things down, like pieces of a puzzle. 🧩

This young rider got the right feel of having a plan (which precise foot she wants to move where), intention, pressure of touch that starts as an invitation, and the perfect timing to release the pressure to reward the horse's effort. She got this with her hands on the ground.

Then I asked her, "Can you put that same feel, focus, and timing that you have with your hand into your leg and heel while riding?"

Her eyes got wide with a "aha" moment of realization, and rode the same pattern she taught her horse on the ground...and they nailed it! 🎯

The whole ride improved. ✨

Small steps with great feel creates riding with fluidity! Riding is more fun when your horse feels like your dance partner. πŸ•Ί

Awesome work!

I enjoy watching Decker pick up on a new ground pole pattern as a part of our warm up. When he doesn't appear to be struggling on his own, then I ride it.

My job: setting him up well and carrying myself so that I'm not in his way!

We will build back up to jumping higher and higher to work on his fitness and confidence in both directions.

Bit by bit, it's all a cinch!

I had a plan. I was about to take Decker out for a warm up and cantering exercise. But he was so cute πŸ₯Ί napping in the sun! β˜€οΈ

So I joined him in his plan instead.😎

The art of being goal oriented, yet flexible and seeing a golden opportunity to just "be" with my horse.

Last week, I was getting sun burnt one day and freezing cold the next.

Jesus: The Master Colt-Starter 🀠

This Sunday we read the long Gospel of Jesus' ride into Jerusalem on the c**t of a donkey. The crowd cheers, they want a king. However, the Lord inverts what they believe is more powerful. He could have ridden on a war horse that would rival those of the Roman soldiers' mounts as an earthly king may do, but He did not. πŸ‡

He chose a donkey. 🫏 A small yet sturdy beast that is used to haul, plow, and carry heavy burdens. This points to the kind of sacrifice Jesus is willing to make of His own life out of Love for His people, to carry the burden of sin and the cross to Calvary. ❀️

Anyone who trains horses knows how much more difficult it can be to train:
1. young, unridden horses.
2. donkeys.
Much less, a young donkey never ridden going into a crowd of people waving objects around.πŸ˜… Please, try this once and let us know if you survive to tell the tale (just kidding, let me help you train it first!).

Among the horse trainers, we call training all young horses to be ridden "c**t-starting." Also, it's said if you can train donkeys and mules, you are twice the horseman due to how much patience and skill it can take.

That "stubborn" quality makes you a more honest trainer. You can't simply scare or rush a donkey into doing things and expect good, quick results- especially if you are going to just immediately ride the un-started c**t into a parade of people the same day. Yes, Jesus did many impressive miracles- but for me as a horse person I find this riding the c**t of a donkey into town a miracle all its own (and rising from the dead is nice, especially if eventually that donkey gets the best of me πŸ˜…).

For this reason, I often refer to today's reading as the
"Jesus- The Master Colt-Starter Gospel." πŸ™Œ

Happy Hosanna (or Palm) Sunday! May the Great Holy Week begin...

Some people have owned and ridden horses all their life, but have never experienced real communication with a horse without all the gear. πŸ‡

Usually, without the halter and lead, the horse just travels away. The owner may only feel a horse draw to them for the grain bucket, when they want a scratch, or for security, ect. πŸ₯• 🐎

As they say, when we take away all the gear, we find the truth of what the horse really thinks of us and our presence. At "liberty" (no gear), the horse is free to leave or choose to stay throughout maneuvers that are cued.

My horse, Decker, and I have spent a lot of time at liberty. It can be much harder than it looks! Thankfully, Decker has done so much liberty that he is willing to puzzle through trying to find that conversation with other people with those that come to me to explore it. This can be tremendously helpful as clients learn how strong a connection can feel so they can bring that knowledge to their sessions with their own horse at home.

This week, Decker helped another person find more connection and flow at liberty! He will certainly tell you when he is connected and when he is notπŸ˜… which does make him a good teacher. What a lovely liberty session, Allison! πŸ‘

The small joys at the barn, part 2.

When all hope was lost....

Finding my right hand working glove in the stall when I last picked out hooves right there a while agoπŸ™Œ....which means I passed over it several times over a few weeks while feeding and cleaning the stall🀦.

I have a small pile of left hand gloves while the right gets lost. Here's to being right handed! πŸ€ͺ

If I did a more distant photo, you would have passed over it, too.

Whether it's a simple trim or a corrective shoe, access to a diligent, well-educated farrier can be hard to find and make all the difference to your horse's wellbeing!

I enjoyed driving with my friend down to the Bluegrass Horseshoeing School in Prestonsburg, KY. She learned what the judges are looking for to make the perfect trim and shoe as they scored new and upcoming farriers. We made a few fun stops at the Red River Gorge exit!

You will be so prepared to score well in the fall, Hannah! This is what horse girls think is a great gals getaway road tripπŸ˜…

When you want to go faster, but...

you are still new to the horse, new to ba****ck riding, new to learning where your horse's feet are, and learning the pattern. 🐎πŸ’ͺβœ¨πŸ’ž

I appreciate my clients that love learning the fundamentals thoroughly and having fun with the process!

Plus, adding speed while still getting coordinated does not tend to make anything better. It just overwhelms the brain.🧠

As we get new neuropathy ways organized and moving, confidence and ability meet. ✨ Then, the speed will come naturally and clients are happily cantering with control. πŸ™Œ

We all get there at our own pace! We would certainly never get anywhere if we did not show up and try.

Becky is absolutely going places and will be blazing trails soon! 😎 Bravo!

A client and I are celebrating that it's finally warm enough and dry enough to ride outside! Great work today, Becky! We will both be decently sore, but it's just getting back into riding shape. πŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺ
