*Details: Valid October 1 to 31, 2026, on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays only. One child (12 and under) receives free admission with one full-price paid adult and a valid Kids Free coupon, with a maximum of two free children per transaction. The coupon must be presented at the ticket counter, works as a stand-alone offer, and applies separately from other discounts. Children must be accompanied by an adult during the visit.

Meet the light-footed Ridgway’s rail, an endangered Southern California marsh bird, and big news from our rail program!

Light-footed Ridgway’s rails (LFRR) live in coastal salt marshes and are found only in Southern California and northern Baja California, Mexico. Their presence is a sign of a healthy marsh. 🌊

We’re starting our 27th year with the LFRR program! 🎉 The program supports the conservation of wild rail populations. The Living Coast is part of a group of organizations working together on zoological propagation, field research, annual census, monitoring, banding, genetic sampling, and introductions into the wild. We raise rails in our care, and then we release them into the marsh to help the wild population grow.

🥚 A brand new pair is joining us for the 2027 breeding season, and we’re also housing a solo female.

🧬 Since LFRR are endangered, genetics play a big part in our work. We plan pairings carefully to keep rail populations genetically diverse, avoid genetic bottlenecks and inbreeding, and boost their future offspring’s chances in the wild.

We’re also wrapping up the 2026 breeding season with 3 adult rails aging out of the program. 🪶

🏡 Two were released at San Joaquin Marsh in Irvine, CA on September 22nd, 2026.

🍂 The last rail is going through a molt, so his release is scheduled for a later date.

How you can help this local endangered species:
🥤 Use less single-use plastic
🌿 Choose non-toxic pesticides
♻️ Dispose of chemicals properly

Rails need healthy, unpolluted waterways to survive, and your choices at home make a difference! 🦆
