š 2026 IDITAROD HALL OF FAME SPOTLIGHT
Behind every Iditarod are dedicated volunteers who give their time, expertise and heart to support the race and the dogs who make it possible.
Today, we spotlight the second member of the 2026 Volunteer Classā¦
š¾ BOB SEPT
Bob Septās Iditarod story began in 1978 with a volunteer certificate on a bulletin board. He didnāt even know how to pronounce āIditarodā ā but curiosity led him to connect with other veterinarians, and in 1979, he headed to Rohn River as a volunteer veterinarian.
That first experience sparked nearly 20 years of service to The Last Great RaceĀ®.
Bob went on to serve as the raceās head veterinarian and as President of the Iditarod Board of Directors from 1981 to 1984, helping guide the organization and its rules during the raceās formative years. Along the way, he traveled throughout Alaska, met people from communities across the state, and played an important role in supporting the health and care of the canine athletes.
For Bob, the experience brought challenges, friendships and plenty of adventure ā all in service to a race he came to care deeply about.
His veterinary expertise, leadership and dedication left a lasting mark on the Iditarod and reflect the spirit of volunteerism that keeps The Last Great RaceĀ® moving forward.
