Soapbox moment…
Can we PLEASE start breeding horses with a plan instead of just posting pedigrees and asking “what should I breed her to?”
Can we see the MARE first?
What does she look like?
How is her conformation?
What’s her disposition?
What job is she doing—or supposed to do?
Where does she excel, and where does she need improvement?
Because that’s where breeding decisions should start.
Pedigree absolutely has its place—but it should be one of the LAST things you look at, not the first. Yes, some crosses don’t work for valid reasons, and yes, strong bloodlines matter… but papers don’t fix poor planning.
Breed for PURPOSE.
If you’re a taller rider with a smaller mare, picking a stallion known for producing smaller horses probably isn’t helping you reach your goal. If you’ve got a bigger mare and want more speed, agility, or refinement—then choose accordingly.
It’s not that hard to find stallions today that have BOTH the talent and the pedigree. We’re not lacking options—we’re lacking intentionality.
We can do better as breeders.
Let’s start making matches that actually improve the horse, not just the paperwork.
This was a post on a FB page - just an example of 100 I have seen. Do not know the person - no shade just my morning coffee and soap box thought.
