Before you spend all winter feeding hay, make sure your horse can actually use it!

Fall wellness visits are a good time to check dental health, body condition, nutrition, parasite control, and vaccine needs before cold weather increases the demands on your horse.

A horse that looks fine now can start losing weight quickly once winter hits.

Get ahead of it. Fall appointments are filling now. Call Appalachian Veterinary Services to get on the schedule today! 🐴

How much will an open cow cost you this winter?🐄

Probably more than the cost of preg checking your entire herd.

In Virginia, hay is averaging around $171/ton. That puts winter hay costs alone at roughly **$385 per cow** from December through April.

For a typical 50-cow herd, a 5 to 8% open rate means you could be feeding 3 or 4 open cows all winter.

That’s $1,150–$1,540 in hay alone going into cows that won’t produce a calf next year. Add feed, mineral, pasture, and labor, and the real cost is even higher.

Now compare that to preg checking.

We can preg check a 50-cow herd in about 2 hours for less than $600.

Find just two open cows and the preg check has already paid for itself in hay savings alone. Then factor in cull cows are bringing around $1800 each in Southwestern Virginia, you've just saved $700, and put another $3600 in your operating account.

Plus, preg checking gives us a chance to evaluate body condition and identify cows that may need extra attention before winter, helping you put your feed and resources where they’ll actually produce a return.

Don’t feed an open cow all winter just to find out in the spring.

Fall schedules fill quickly. Call Appalachian Veterinary Services to get your herd scheduled.
