ZOOMIES! They’re essential for health and happiness.
WHY ZOOMIES ARE IMPORTANT: Physical exercise-maintains healthy weight and muscle tone, mental stimulation-prevents boredom and depression, stress relief-releases pent-up energy and anxiety, natural behavior expression-fulfills instinctive needs, social bonding-strengthens flock relationships, and cardiovascular health-keeps heart and lungs strong.
HOW TO ENCOURAGE: Provide ample safe space for running (at least 100 sq ft per duck), create exciting trigger events (fresh pool water, favorite treats), free-range time daily, enrichment items that inspire play, and celebrate their zoomies—your enthusiasm encourages them!
NEVER DISCOURAGE UNLESS: They’re running toward danger, injury risk is present, or they’re escaping/panicking (address the fear source). Ducks denied play opportunities become depressed, lethargic, and develop behavioral problems. Zoomies = healthy, happy ducks!

Duck zoomies are sudden bursts of frantic running, flapping, and pure joy filled chaos!

WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE: Explosive sprinting in circles or straight lines, wings spread out while running at full speed, jumping, hopping, and leaping, rapid direction changes and zigzagging, loud excited vocalizations, and the whole flock often joins in creating mass chaos.

WHY THEY HAPPEN: Pure joy and excitement, expressing happiness, energy release after being cooped up, celebration after getting fresh water or favorite treats, response to weather changes (especially rain or cool mornings), social contagion, one duck starts and everyone joins, and instinctive behavior, practicing predator escape movements.

WHEN YOU’LL SEE IT: First thing in the morning when let out of coop, after getting fresh pool or bath water, after rainfall, when given favorite treats, and during play sessions with flock mates.

It’s the duck equivalent of a dog getting the zoomies, pure, unfiltered JOY!
