Spay & Neuter: Protecting Their Future Health | Part 1 of 3

A routine surgery at the right time can help prevent a serious medical problem—or even an emergency—later.

Most people know that spaying and neutering prevent unplanned litters. What receives less attention is how many reproductive health problems these procedures can help prevent.

For female pets, spaying can:

• Prevent pyometra, a uterine infection that can quickly become life-threatening
• Reduce the risk of mammary tumors, with the degree of protection influenced by species and timing
• Prevent diseases involving the ovaries and uterus
• Prevent pregnancy and complications such as difficult labor or an emergency C-section

For male pets, neutering can:

• Eliminate the risk of testicular cancer
• Reduce the risk of benign prostate enlargement
• Reduce the risk of certain testosterone-dependent conditions, including perianal adenomas and perineal hernias

The right timing is not exactly the same for every pet. Species, breed, expected adult size, s*x, health, and lifestyle all matter—especially for dogs.
