πΎ DONβT KIDNAP KITTENS πΎ
If you find kittens outside, please pause before picking them up β mom may be closer than you think.
Every spring and summer, well-meaning people bring in healthy nursing kittens believing theyβve been abandoned. In reality, mother cats often leave their babies temporarily to hunt, eat, and avoid drawing predators back to the nest.
πΌ Kittens under 4β5 weeks old have the best chance of survival with their mother. Mother cats provide nutrition, warmth, immune support, grooming, stimulation to urinate/defecate, and around-the-clock care that people simply cannot fully replicate.
Bottle and syringe feeding can save lives when truly needed β but it is incredibly demanding and high risk. Neonatal kittens require feeding every 2β4 hours (including overnight), precise temperatures, and careful technique. Orphaned kittens have significantly higher mortality rates compared with kittens that remain with their mother.
π± Unless kittens are in immediate danger (injured, sick, cold, confirmed orphaned, unsafe location, deceased mother, etc.), the best thing you can do is:
β’ Observe from a distance for several hours
β’ Look for signs mom is returning
β’ Leave kittens where they are if safe
β’ If possible, catch mom WITH the kittens
Why catch mom too?
Because mother cats can become pregnant again, very quickly β sometimes even while still nursing their current litter. Keeping mom with kittens and getting the family into rescue together helps prevent another litter cycle and gives everyone the best chance at a healthy future.
π£ At Eastshore, our maternity ward is currently FULL with nursing mothers and abandoned litters. Space and foster resources are becoming extremely limited, and every litter that can safely stay with their mother opens lifesaving space for kittens who truly have no mom.
For the healthiest development, kittens should remain with their mother until they are fully weaned β typically around 8 weeks of age.
If you find kittens and arenβt sure what to do, contact a rescue. A quick message could save lives. β€οΈ
