One of the hardest parts of loving a dog is realizing the final day often feels incredibly ordinary.

A favorite meal.
A little sunshine.
Extra cuddles.
Quiet moments together.

Most dogs are not asking for one more perfect week.
They’re asking for comfort, familiarity, and the people they love nearby.

The goal is never perfection.
Just peace.

One of the biggest fears families have is not knowing what to expect during an in-home euthanasia appointment.

My hope is that this helps make the unknown feel a little less frightening. In most homes, the appointment is quiet, gentle, unhurried, and centered completely around your pet’s comfort.

There is no “perfect” way to say goodbye. Some families cry. Some talk and tell stories. Some sit quietly holding their pet. All of it is okay. ❤️

For many families, this is one of the hardest parts of pet loss. Bringing them home again.

Every crematory is a little different, but this is what pet ashes, urns, paw prints, and memorial items commonly look like when they’re returned to families. I know a lot of people are nervous about this process, so I hope this helps make it feel a little less unknown.

Two years ago, I graduated from the University of Missouri with no idea where this journey would take me.

If you had asked me then what my life would look like today, I never would have guessed this would be the answer.

Over the last two years, I’ve worked in general practice, emergency medicine, urgent care, relief work, and now full-time in-home euthanasia while continuing to provide hospice consultations and palliative care. Over the last 8 months, I’ve also built a social media platform that has connected me with so many incredible people and families.

I’ve always been someone who thinks a little outside the box and doesn’t necessarily follow the standard path, and honestly, that’s what led me here.

I found my passion in helping families through one of the hardest days of their lives with a calm, compassionate, and reassuring approach in the comfort of their home. It may sound strange to some people, but the gratitude and peace families express afterward is what keeps me doing this every day.

I graduated alongside my beautiful fiancée Caroline, who is now a veterinary ophthalmology resident, was hooded by my mentor and close friend Dr. Amy Daley, and through it all, Heidi has been there every step of the way. I actually got Heidi just days before vet school started, so she’s truly been part of this entire journey.

A lot can change in two years, and honestly, this career has taken me in directions I never expected.

There are so many things pet owners apologize for during end-of-life care that veterinarians never judge them for.

Not crying enough.
Crying too much.
Waiting too long.
Feeling like it’s “too soon.”
Not being able to stay in the room.
Questioning if they’re making the right decision.

Most families are carrying an impossible amount of love, grief, guilt, and fear all at once. And the truth is… none of those feelings make you a bad pet owner.

They make you human.

As veterinarians, we rarely remember the exact words people say during those moments. What we remember is how deeply they loved their pet.

Most people expect in-home euthanasia to feel very medical or clinical.
But for many families, seeing a regular car pull up instead of a huge van actually feels a little more personal… and a little less overwhelming.

Sometimes the quietest approach is the most comforting. ❤️
