As temperatures cool and routines change, fall brings a few seasonal hazards for pets to keep in mind:

🍁 Keep pets away from mushrooms and other unknown plants they may find outdoors.

🎃 Keep pumpkins, decorations, and seasonal treats out of reach. Some foods and decorations can be dangerous if swallowed.

🕷️ Continue flea and tick prevention. Parasites remain active in many areas even as temperatures drop.

🌡️ Watch the weather. Cooler temperatures can be uncomfortable or dangerous, especially for small, senior, or short coated pets.

A little preparation can help keep your pet safe and healthy throughout the season. And if your pet gets into something they should not, our emergency team is here when you need us.

✨ Meet Dr. Carissa Thomas! 🐾💙

We’re excited to introduce Dr. Carissa Thomas, a native Texan who brings her bubbly personality, compassion, and passion for patient care to Premier Veterinary Group!

Dr. Thomas works collaboratively with our specialty teams to elevate patient safety and care in anesthesia and analgesia. Her clinical interests include multimodal anesthesia and analgesia, ultrasound-guided regional analgesia techniques, chronic pain management, and strengthening the human-animal bond. She also loves teaching and finding new ways to make a difference for her patients. 🩺🐶

🎓 Education & Training:
• Tuskegee University – Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
• North Carolina State University – Small Animal Rotating Internship
• University of Georgia & Dogwood Veterinary Specialists – Veterinary Anesthesia & Analgesia Residency

Dr. Thomas is also a published researcher, with her work featured in the American Journal of Veterinary Research in 2025.

When she’s not caring for patients, you’ll find her hanging out with her pups, trying new restaurants, exploring the city, or doing what any true Beyoncé fan would do… showing up when Queen Bey comes to town!

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Carissa Thomas to PVG! We’re so happy to have her on our team! 💙🐾

🐾💛 Our senior pets have a way of slowing down… but not every change is “just getting older.”

As pets age, health changes can happen gradually, making it easy to miss the small signs that something may need attention.

Keep an eye out for changes in:
🐶 Appetite or drinking
🐾 Mobility or comfort
💤 Energy or sleep patterns
🧠 Behavior or personality
🫁 Breathing
🚽 Bathroom habits

Knowing what’s normal for your pet makes it easier to recognize when something has changed. And when you notice a sudden or significant change, especially when several symptoms appear together, it’s worth reaching out to your veterinarian.

Because when it comes to our senior pets, you know them best. ❤️

If something doesn’t seem right and you’re concerned about a sudden change in your senior pet, our emergency team is here to help, day or night. 🐾

Remembering the Dogs & Handlers of 9/11 🐾

Today, we honor the extraordinary search and rescue dogs and their handlers who served together through unimaginable circumstances.

Their courage, loyalty, and partnership brought hope, comfort, and healing when our country needed it most.

We remember the teams who served, the people they helped, and the veterinary professionals who cared for these incredible animals.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

🐾Meet Dr. Miranda Buseman, DACVECC!🩺

If you’ve spent any time around PVG, you know that our Critical Care team gets some of the toughest cases, and Dr. Buseman has a special passion for taking on those really tough ones. From polytrauma and sepsis to transfusions, coagulopathies, and TPE, she loves the challenge of critical care and, most importantly, helping patients make it home to the people who love them. ❤️

A graduate of Iowa State University, Dr. Buseman completed her rotating internship right here at Premier Veterinary Group before returning to Iowa State for her ECC specialty internship and residency.

But there’s WAY more to Dr. Buseman than her impressive veterinary credentials!

🏍️ Fun fact: She’s had her motorcycle license since she was just 16!
🐶 She’s a dog lover through and through and is currently mom to a 12½-year-old Great Dane.
🌎 She’s traveled to some pretty incredible places, including the Galápagos Islands and South Africa, where she worked with amazing species like cheetahs, rhinos and elephants.
🎮 When she’s not at the hospital, she loves video games, photography, crafts, cooking, traveling and discovering new restaurants.

And what does she love most about PVG? The people. She says the atmosphere and the team are truly top-notch, and that everyone advocates endlessly for their patients, something that makes even the hardest days a little easier.

We’re pretty lucky to have this talented, adventurous, dog-loving Criticalist on our team. ❤️🐾

With the addition of a second internist, we can provide even greater access to the advanced, specialized care our patients and referring veterinarians rely on.

Meet Dr. Angela Bella! 🩺

You may already recognize Dr. Angela Bella from her time at Premier Veterinary Group as a veterinary technician. We're thrilled to welcome her back but this time as Dr. Bella!

What you may not know is that Dr. Bella minored in Italian and spent a summer studying abroad in Siena, Italy, where she experienced the historic Palio di Siena—one of the world's oldest horse races.

Throughout veterinary school, she developed a passion for wildlife medicine, caring for ambassador animals, volunteering in her school's Wildlife Medical Clinic, and completing an externship at the DuPage Wildlife Conservation Center. Her favorite patients? Canada geese and birds of prey!

Outside the hospital, Dr. Bella enjoys video games, board games, and hosting game nights with friends.

Please join us in giving Dr. Bella a warm welcome! 💙🐾

🐾🩷 Patient Spotlight: Meet Daisy!!

She first arrived at Premier Veterinary Group through our friends at One Tail at a Time, severely underweight and not eating. After an ultrasound performed by our radiologist, Dr. Rivard, the cause became clear: she had a linear foreign body causing an intestinal obstruction. Daisy was rushed into emergency surgery with Dr. Schaul, who discovered the culprit: a trash bag that Daisy had eaten while desperately trying to find food.

Thankfully, surgery was a success, and Daisy began her road to recovery. But her story didn't end there...

Dr. Schaul quickly fell in love with this sweet girl, took her home to foster, and before long became a proud foster fail. 🐶❤️

Today, Daisy is at a healthy weight, thriving in her forever home, and enjoying life with her feline siblings. Stories like Daisy's remind us why we do what we do every day. 🥰

Our team is celebrating Shark Week with our favorite emotional support sharks because even ER & specialty medicine is better with a little extra fin-tastic support! 😂

A few things sharks and veterinary medicine have in common:

🦈 Sharks have an incredible sensory system. They can detect vibrations, movement, smells, and even tiny electrical signals.
🐾 Our teams use their own finely tuned senses, observation, experience, and clinical instincts to recognize when a patient needs a closer look.

🦈 Sharks have multiple rows of teeth and can continually replace lost teeth.
🐾 Our teams have multiple layers of expertise, from technicians to specialists to diagnostics, ready to tackle whatever walks (or gets carried!) through our doors.

🦈 Sharks can detect movement and pressure changes through their lateral line.
🐾 Our teams are constantly monitoring for subtle changes in a patient's condition; sometimes the smallest change can tell us a lot.

🦈 Sharks have been around for more than 400 million years.
🐾 Veterinary medicine may be a little younger, but we've learned a LOT along the way. 😉

And then there’s our very own Lab Shark… aka Shruikan 🐾🦈
Highly trained. Always watching. Takes quality control VERY seriously. We’re pretty sure he’s been waiting all year for Shark Week, so have we!

Whether you're a shark enthusiast, a veterinary professional, or just here for the adorable emotional support sharks… we wish everyone a FIN-tastic Shark Week from all of us at Premier! 🦈💙
