For a food (and attention) motivated puppy, SIT and COME are fairly easy but PLACE can be intimidating. So why do we bother?

First off, we’re laying foundations for adult work. A young puppy might not be able to truly hold a duration command like PLACE but we want it to be familiar.

It’s also a fantastic confidence builder. Watch little Milo here hesitate to make the jump up onto the Kuranda bed. Overcoming fears at an early age helps create a more balanced adult dog.

But maybe most importantly, you’re teaching the puppy that they don’t have to be involved in everything that happens around them.

People love to talk about socializing puppies, but socialization isn’t just letting your puppy interact with everything and everyone. Sometimes the most valuable lesson is learning to observe the world without participating in it. Hence why we love PLACE.

Structure creates confident dogs. Start teaching it early.

We focus mainly on adult dog training around here but if you’re a former or current client, we happily offer in-person puppy programs to cover crate training, potty training, socialization, and general obedience.

It’s that time of year again, Pack!

We will be hosting our annual Howl-O-Ween photoshoot Monday 10/19, Tuesday 10/20, and Wednesday 10/21.

All pups in attendance for daycare will receive a free photoshoot, in costume. A few reminders if this is your first time:

-We always provide costumes but you’re welcome to send your own. Just remember I use costumes and themes that photograph well. A lot of dog costumes are cute for parades or trick-or-treating but don’t look as good in a staged pose.

-It takes me a few days to upload everyone’s photos and send them out but you do get a JPEG copy via Google Drive link.

-Please send muzzles and/or e-collars if you think your dog needs a little extra hand. I’ve been busy with Carlito Burrito and not nearly as hands on with the dogs as in years past so training tools are appreciated.

-Be sure to update Gingr with any allergies as I DO use treats to get the perfect shot of your pup!

Now that Burrito is a very opinionated toddler, he has some special tricks and treats up his sleeve for our Pack. Stay tuned to our feed during the month of October so you don’t miss out!

I would know. I’m a lifelong dog owner who used to think “shock collars” were cruel until I actually tried one and LOOK HOW DOPE LIFE IS NOW!

Oh yea, and I ended up marrying the dog trainer who changed mine and Luna’s life but that’s a story for another reel 🤭.

Our feed is full of advice for choosing the right dog trainer if you aren’t local to Chicago.

All dogs deserve the benefit of reliable, safe training. And there are a lot of humans out there willing to take your money without providing that.

Make sure they’re the right human for your best friend and not someone out to make what they think is an easy buck.

Also PLEASE don’t pay thousands of dollars for on-leash obedience programs. If they can’t provide service level behavior for an “easy” dog in four weeks then they’re clearly a scam artist.

People are always surprised to hear how many boundaries we have in place with our two-year-old and our three impeccably trained dogs.

“Shouldn’t their training mean everything is fine and you don’t have to worry?”

NOPE!

Any trainer who says otherwise is lying. I said what I said. We’re talking about unpredictable living creatures. The word accident is in the dictionary for a reason.

When you bring a baby or infant into the home, the dog needs to learn boundaries. But once it grows into a toddler, it’s time to reverse the roles a bit and start putting some of the responsibility onto the child to respect the dog’s space.

And remember, it’s ultimately you as the adult who is truly responsible for keeping your little pack safe. We have unfortunately seen even the nicest dogs snap when pushed.

Sorry for the slow socials lately, Pack! I’ve been busy cooking up a new surprise but Pack Momma is back in the facility today and when I walked past our big security camera board I saw gretchenfetches was on the front “place” mat so I decided to film and I’m so glad I did!

This is what running a kennel is all about! 🥰. There are other dogs who get hyped to see me (you can also hear one of them barking for my attention because she was in group lol) but Gretchy is a great example of what you get out of a dog when you PUT IN CONSISTENT WORK.

In addition to attending regular daycare, Gretchen’s pawrents work with her nonstop and it shows. She can be super excited to see me, receive all the love in the world, and still not break her place command. For me as a dog mom, this is chef’s kiss behavior.

You can have a great dog after great training but YOU putting in the work is what makes this kind of moment possible. I love to see it!

Also just a great reminder of how easy it can be to run a quiet kennel. My level of excitement to see Gretchen got the dogs in the playpen hyped up, but a few simple verbal corrections quieted everyone down. When dogs understand the expectations, you set them up for success. A quiet kennel does not mean no barking, no fun, or no love. It means we can control the chaos to provide exceptional care for your dogs.

Anyway, those are my thoughts for the day. You guys are the best. Stay tuned for some exciting announcements in the days and weeks to come!
