Every (responsible) dog parent’s worst nightmare.

An unknown dog charges you from across a field or park. The owner makes no attempt to recall the dog but assures you “he’s friendly”. Or worse, they do recall and the dog completely ignores it.

I had originally intended this reel to be funny. But in all actuality, a dog you don’t know approaching you should always be considered a threat. I say that as both a human mother and a dog mother. And the wife of a dog trainer.

You don’t know this dog. Dogs are also unpredictable - especially ones without proper training. So what do I recommend you do when approached by an off-leash dog?

1. Make it clear the owner needs to call their dog.
Seems obvious but I’ll say it anyway. Put the ball in their court. Look like the Karen. Better safe than sorry.

2. Be prepared to body block.
Create space between your dog (or child, children, whatever) and the approaching dog. Use your own physicality to do so. Arms out, yell, kind of like you’d think of with a wild bear.

3. Be prepared to get more physical.
When it comes to avoiding a potential scuffle or injury, don’t be afraid to kick a dog to keep them away. It sounds cruel but I’d rather kick an untrained dog than risk a bite to my own pack. And remember, you didn’t create this situation, the owner did. You’re NOT the bad guy here.

I think Number 3 always surprises people the most, especially because I’m such a dog lover. But truly, I do not consider it “over the top” to prioritize MY pack over a stranger’s dog…especially a stranger who was irresponsible enough to let their dog off leash without having recall.

If you don’t want me to kick your dog, keep it on the leash or get the tools and training to ensure your dog’s safety.

Your dog does NOT need a TED Talk. 😂

One of the biggest mistakes we see in dog training? Owners talking WAY too much.

“Come here. Come here. Come HERE. Buddy, come on. Come here. What are you doing? I said COME HERE…”

Meanwhile, the dog is like: I have absolutely no idea what any of this means, but I’m enjoying the podcast. 🎙️🐕

Dogs aren’t verbal communicators like we are. They learn through repetition, consistency, body language, environmental cues, and consequences.

If you say a command 7 times before your dog responds, you’re not teaching them to listen to the command—you’re teaching them that the command doesn’t really matter until you’ve said it 7 times.

Good dog obedience training isn’t about talking louder or talking more. It’s about making your communication clear enough that your dog understands what you’re asking the FIRST time.

Less talking.
More communicating.
Better timing.
Clearer expectations.

And yes… sometimes the best thing you can say to your dog is absolutely nothing. 😂

How do dog owners pick the right dog trainer?

It’s an incredibly over-saturated market with an equally incredible number of under-qualified trainers.

I’m a reactive dog mom who had to w**d out the fakers trying to train her dog until I married the dog trainer who eventually changed my dog’s life.

So what should you look for and what are some warning signs?

✅ Client Testimonials
Anyone can post a Google review, especially if they’re incentivized for it. Look for real stories, video testimonials, and before and afters.

🚩 Certifications & Accreditations
Trust me when I say any idiot can get a certification. Real dog trainers come with decades of hands on, real world experience. And don’t even get me started on the “Canine Good Citizen” nonsense…

✅ A Variety Of Success Stories
A truly gifted dog trainer can work with the Lassies and the Kujos. Be sure your trainer is well-rounded enough to handle any personality type.

🚩 Adamantly Force-Free
There is a time and a place for all methods of training, from reward-based to aversive tools, from service dog training to puppy obedience. If your trainer doesn’t have experience with all of it, it’s time to get a new trainer.

Did I miss any red flags? Being a dog owner is a hard enough job. You shouldn’t have to worry about people trying to scam your money. Speaking of which, should we chat about vets again soon? 🤭🤪

“THAT’S ANIMAL ABUSE!”

“AVERSIVE TRAINING TOOLS RUIN A DOG”

Yep. Luna here looks really unhappy and mistreated.

The irony is that prior to her e-collar training, this dog was too nervous to leave the house. And when she did, she’d try to bite every person and dog she encountered.

I love spreading awareness about the many benefits of aversive dog training tools because it’s such a misunderstood topic. People hear the term “aversive” and immediately shut down without actually educating themselves.

All dogs deserve this level of fun and freedom in their lives. And sorry but there is NO OTHER KIND OF DOG TRAINING THAT MAKES IT SAFE TO TAKE YOUR DOG OFF-LEASH. The words accident and emergency are in the dictionary for a reason. It’s unsafe and reckless to allow your dog to be off-leash without a tool like the e-collar in place as a backup.

Just because “nothing has happened” doesn’t mean nothing CAN’T happen.

We’ve been in the dog training business a long time. We’ve seen some really tragic accidents. And I’ll tell you something as the dog mom (aka not the trainer) in the relationship - it is ALWAYS preventable.

If you have a reactive or an aggressive dog, odds are you’re already great at creating boundaries. It is the “super sweet” dogs who “would never ever do anything” that snap. Every. Single. Time.

Let’s talk about why.

Because the parents of these dogs never assume the worst. But a dog is a living creature and like all of us, has its limits. The difference between a dog and a human though is that they communicate with their mouth in a very nonverbal way. A simple correction for a dog could be a life-altering bite for your child.

We don’t mean to scare anyone, but as parents and dog parents, one of the biggest mistakes we see clients make is that they don’t have their guard up and they don’t create enough boundaries between babies, toddlers, and dogs.

If you’ve been following us for a while, you’ve seen Burrito interact with all three of our dogs in very different ways. We understand each of our dogs and their limitations. Even with our most docile pittie, Lex, we’re always right there to supervise and cut a snuggle session short.

How is your dog daycare staff trained?

Can your dog trainer tell the difference between nervous and anxious?

Fear is one of the most mis-categorized behaviors in dog training because it gets used too broadly. An experienced trainer will break down behaviors and body language to target the actual problem.

Miss Cambria here is one of our favorite clients because she's just nervous. With her training, she's been able to overcome situations that cause her nerves to provoke a reaction. If she was truly aggressive or even fear-based aggressive like other trainers label her, we'd see a very different dog in this consultation.

Describe your job but make it sound illegal.

People willingly hand us their dogs for the day…

We keep them in a structured and safe environment, make them exercise, practice obedience, enforce nap time, and supervise who they’re allowed to hang out with…

Then I charge the owners before I give their dogs back. 🤭

We call it daycare.
The dogs call it camp.
The owners call it the only place their dog actually comes home tired.
