Midwest Akita Rescue Society (MARS) is an all volunteer 501(c)(3)
non-profit organization that was formed in 1998 by a small
group of concerned individuals that felt that they could
assist orphaned and in need Akitas residing in the Midwestern
region of the United States. We were originally an arm of the
Akita
Owners Rescue Foundation, Inc and later enveloped our mother organization and are now

Akita Owners Rescue Foundation. We are a non-profit, all volunteer organization
dedicated to helping Akitas and we depend
entirely on tax-deductible donations to continue this work.The
purpose of this organization is to rescue, medically treat,
rehabilitate and re-home abandoned, relinquished or
otherwise homeless Akita dogs. We service the states of
Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Iowa,
Missouri and Minnesota as well as parts of Kentucky and Kansas.

Our spotlight orphans of the day

Taz and Sasha.

Why are they still with us? I’ll never know.
These are two amazing dogs that deserve a Forever home

They have been with us since 12/31/24 😞

Taz and Sasha
They have been with us for 615 days and counting. They deserve a home of their own
Seriously, Why aren’t these two adopted They are the sweetest pups around.
They do not deserve to live their lives in a kennel. They deserve a nice yard and loving people
They were found in a home with their owner who was unfortunately no longer alive. It is unsure how long they were there with him without food and water.
Taz acts like a puppy while Sasha is more serious Both are amazing dogs and whoever adopts them will be very lucky

WHY WE DON’T DO SAME-SEX PLACEMENTS
. And before you come into the comments with the “not my dogs!” stories, photos and comments - remember this: an exception does not disprove a rule. Responsible breeding decisions cannot be based on the best-case scenario or the exception—we have to make them based on what we know about the breed, the risks involved, and what gives our puppies the greatest likelihood of lifelong success.

Due to the Akita’s breed history and genetic temperament, same-s*x aggression is relatively common. For this reason, you will rarely find a reputable Akita breeder willing to place two dogs of the same s*x in the same household.

While there are certainly people who have successfully kept same-s*x Akitas together, it is important to understand that those situations are generally the exception to what is often a hard rule.

Even Akitas raised together from puppyhood who appear to get along well when they are young can develop serious same-s*x aggression as they mature. These conflicts can escalate into severe fights resulting in injury to one or both dogs and can make safely managing the household extremely difficult. Unfortunately, same-s*x aggression is also one reason Akitas ultimately, unfairly, find themselves surrendered to breed rescues and shelters.

Because we do everything possible to safeguard the puppies we produce and give them the best opportunity for a long, successful life with their families, we do not make same-s*x placements.

Our responsibility as breeders is not simply to find a good home for a puppy today. We have to consider what that home may look like years from now when that puppy has matured into an adult Akita.

If a family would eventually like a second dog, we generally recommend waiting until the first is at least 18 months to two years old and spayed/neutered. This allows you to understand who your dog truly is as an adult—their temperament, tolerance of other dogs, play style, confidence level, and individual quirks.

With that information, you and your breeder can make a much more informed decision about the temperament and personality of a future puppy most likely to complement the dog already in your home.

Ultimately, we would much rather encourage someone to wait for the right second dog than risk creating a situation that becomes unsafe or unmanageable years down the road.

Our spotlight orphan of the day

**While Rebel loves her foster family, She needs her perfect forever family.
She gets along with her foster brother
Has had limited exposure to the foster family cat and does not really react. She has play dates with her best friend who is a golden retriever. Also has played well with others with proper introduction and supervision, she loves going to puppy socials.
Rebel is a fun loving puppy born March 26. She has just completed her pre-K puppy class. Rebel has great potential to go far with her training, her trainer thinks she would make an exceptional therapy dog. She loves to go on walks and explore.
She loves to play and also loves to just snuggle on the couch. Even though Rebel is still a puppy, she really is good on outings and well behaved.
Potty and crate trained, and knows several commands.
Rebel has the heart of gold and the potential to be a phenomenal dog for her forever family.**

Cooper went to the vets today and got his last shot. This dog was a gem with the entire vet staff.
He is waiting on his forever home.

Why is Gage still here.

This adorable boy was found wandering the streets, and Michigan Humane Society Westland was like, "Hey, can you guys help this furry friend out?" And, of course, we were all, "Heck yeah, we're on it!"

So, have you heard of those legendary Hemingway cats? You know, the ones with extra toes that are supposed to bring crazy good luck? Well, we've got our very own Hemingway boy, and his name is Gage! This unique fella has an extra toe on both front paws, which basically makes him a good luck charm.

Gage is a total@ sweetheart, but he's a bit shy at first. Don't worry, though - he warms up quickly, and once he does, you'll be best buds forever! Here's what we know about Gage so far: he's neutered, up-to-date on his vaccines, microchipped, on prevention, crate trained, and he LOVES people! However, he's not too fond of small animals, and we think it's best if he goes to a home with kids over 8 years old. Oh, and you'll need to have some Akita experience under your belt. He’s at the perfect age of around 2.

Our Precious girl Ally is taking applications for her forever home.

She has come so far in the short time we have had her.

She is a sweet affectionate girl

She takes a minute to warm up to people but once she is your friend she is your friend for life.

Easily bathed and will sit nicely for a nail trim

She LOVES her toys. Especially balls. ⚽️

While she has lived with other male dogs before we feel she needs to be an only as she dislikes her fosters other dogs.

And just like that our sweet boy Sherman got adopted.

The perfect family came along and literally fell in love with Sherman. Well I’m sure Sherman picked them as well. Who said a dog doesn’t pick its family.

Thank you to Raelene, Daniel and Hayden for opening up your hearts and home to Sherman.

William-Billy is a high-energy 2 year old, smaller Akita mix with a heart as big as his personality! He absolutely loves everyone he meets—humans and dogs alike, he has never met a stranger.

He’s currently going through heartworm treatment, but that hasn’t stopped this happy boy from being his happy, loving self. William is looking for a forever home that understands he has plenty of energy and will give him the exercise, patience, and love he deserves.

Panda is a large Akita with a gentle heart and a loyal spirit. Once he trusts you, you become his favorite person—and he’ll be happiest by your side.

Panda can be slow to trust in new environments, so he needs a patient person who understands him, respects his boundaries, and won’t rush the relationship. With time and trust, Panda has so much love to give.
