🚨 As Mating Season Ends, Pup Season Begins 🚨

Chicago, as coyote mating season winds down, we’re entering the next phase… pup season. 🥰

From now through early summer, young coyotes are being born and will soon begin to emerge from their dens. That means you may start seeing more activity in your neighborhood. 👀

This is normal, but it’s also when adult coyotes can be more protective, especially near den sites.

Here’s what to know:

📣 Coyotes are typically born in late March through April
📣 By late April into May, pups begin to emerge and explore areas near their den
📣 You may hear more vocalizing or notice adults being more watchful

💡 Tips for peaceful coexistence:

✔️ Keep pets leashed and close
✔️ Remove food sources like garbage, pet food, and birdseed
✔️ Avoid areas where coyotes may be denning
✔️ Never approach a pup
✔️ If a coyote lingers, make noise, make yourself look big, and back away slowly

If you see a coyote acting strangely or appearing injured, call 311. Otherwise, they’re best left alone to move on naturally.

Please give these wild Chicago families the space they need to raise their young safely. ❤️
