This is what Red Door Animal Shelter provides for the animals in its care. In the Chinese art of feng shui, a red door brings luck to those who live behind it. This is what Red Door wants for the animals in its care. Red Door Animal Shelter is a no-kill shelter committed to helping animals in need. Its primary focus is on the rescue, shelter and adoption of cats, dogs and rabbits—the three most po

pular pets in the United States. Red Door provides a cageless environment for its animals, giving them the closest-to-a-home experience that a shelter can provide. While our emphasis is on re-homing the animals through resourceful adoption programs, the shelter does offer permanent residence for those few animals not placed in homes. Furthermore, Red Door is one of only five no-kill, multi-species shelters in the country that admits rabbits as well as cats and dogs, spays/neuters them and places them up for adoption. Every year, Red Door rescues and finds homes for hundreds of abused and abandoned animals. Red Door is a 501(c)(3) organization. We receive no federal, state, county or city money. We are funded by private donations and grants from private foundations. Red Door was founded in 1998, under the name Chicago Community Humane Center. In January 2000, an adoption center was opened on the far north side of Chicago, in the West Ridge/Rogers Park neighborhood. In June 2002, the shelter's name was officially changed to Red Door Animal Shelter to better reflect the vision of the organization. In February 2003, Red Door expanded its adoption center; the address of the new adoption center is 2410 W. Lunt, Chicago.

🌈❤️Binky free sweet little Sourdough. We'll always be grateful to Valerie and Zach for giving you the best life.

"I adopted Sourdough in 2020, right before lockdown, and I’ll always be beyond grateful for that time. I found so much joy in spoiling him rotten. He slowly came out of his shell and loved finding nooks and crannies to explore. I set up little spots for him all over my home—on the bottom shelf of my nightstand, beside my bed, under my desk—because before long, he was following me everywhere.
Before he was a year old, Sourdough was diagnosed with cardiomegaly and arthritis. Over the years, he also developed dental disease and cataracts. I always worried he might not have a long life because he had lost the genetic lottery. Instead, he pushed through three surgeries and extensive aftercare, bouncing back every time. He became so used to being handled that he was completely unfazed when I attacked him with kisses while he was eating. 😂 He loved running between our legs while we exercised in the living room, and thanks to my COVID routine, he came to expect treats whenever he saw a yoga mat.

"Bonding with his girlfriend, Milktea, turned him into a little troublemaker. He claimed most of our living room couch for himself, and we were happy to give it to him. Once, he went missing at work and we finally found him cozy inside a radiator—which we had to take apart to get him out.

"Even when he was battling a respiratory infection and constantly sneezing, he continued hopping around and exploring the emergency room. He never let his illnesses slow him down until the very end.

"We had hoped Sourdough and Milktea would come down the aisle with us for their own little ceremony. But one week before our wedding, Sourdough passed away peacefully overnight at the hospital.

"My heart is broken. I truly thought of Sourdough as family, and more specifically, as my baby. As my first bunny, he will always have a special place in my heart. He could always make me smile, even when times were tough. He was a cute little dork, with the softest, most kissable fur and the biggest heart.
He was my angel in life, and my angel now. ❤️🐰

Happy ! Meet Biscuits and Gravy. They came to Red Door when their owner couldn’t care for them anymore. They miss their home and their human quite a bit and are on the shy side because of it. They are looking for a quiet home where they can come out of their shell. ❤️❤️❤️

Adoptable Hot Plate is about 5 years old and loves attention and pets more than anything else in the world. His velvety fur is irresistible, so getting pets is no problem. It’s difficult to get pics of him because he’s always begging to be loved. This calm and gentle dude deserves a furever family that will spoil him rotten!

Summer is winding down but the rabbit rescues are amping up. We just want to give a shout out to all the volunteers on the Dumped Bunny field rescue team. We appreciate what you do every day to save the lives of so many rabbits.

Takis was picked up by animal control in Wicker Park. CACC reached out to us immediately because this poor bun couldn't walk. Our vets determined that she has broken ribs from being kicked. 🤬 she'll be on cage rest until she heals and in the meantime she has totally forgiven humans.

The other buns come to us via Dumped bunny the elite rabbit rescue squad:

Lollihop, Granola, and Muffet came from a harrowing rescue in Harvey. Dozens of rabbits being bred for sale were living in terrible conditions. Lucky are the few that escaped their yard and were picked up by DB volunteers.

Pringles is a gentle Rex rabbit caught by DB in the West Woodlawn neighborhood.
