Gentle Leaders are a great piece of walking equipment but many dogs, like Stevie have sensitivities to objects being attached to their face. Desensitization is extremely important in ensuring that your dog is comfortable and confident while on the equipment.

Gentle Leader Walking Tips:

1. Always make sure to introduce your dog to the equipment slowly by putting it on and heavily rewarding while they are wearing it. This should be done at times where you don't actually have to go on a walk and the dog should never be left unattended in the equipment. If they are averse to having it put on don't force them, build up to it slowly

2. Never yank or pull on the gentle leader to correct your dog when walking this can injure their face/neck

3. Attach your gentle leader to a secondary piece of equipment such as a flat collar or harness. This is to ensure that your dog is still secure if they happen to get the gentle leader off

4. Make sure your leash is loose and you aren't causing the gentle leader to tighten up. If there's constant pressure on the dog's face they will not understand the difference between when they're pulling and when they're walking nicely on the leash because the equipment is always tight regardless

5. Make sure your equipment is sized correctly. If fitted properly you should be able to fit 2 fingers laying flat around all the edges of the equipment and the dog should be able to fully open their mouth as normal

Halloween is just around the corner and it's a great opportunity to work on desensitization with your pups. Whether it's getting them used to the adorable costume they're going to be wearing or helping them to pass by spooky decorations desensitization always involves providing plenty of treats and letting the dog set the pace. Desensitization should also always be done in very small doses of exposure and at a level that the dog can easily tolerate. This prevents overstimulation and the risk that the dog may become more afraid of the thing you were trying to get them used to. Another important aspect to keep in mind is recognizing when your dog's stress level is increasing and decreasing. This helps you know when to end an exercise vs when to add more challenge. I've been debating on what to post first on this page and I think a "Meet The Trainer" post would be a good way to start. My name is Edina Jacox I'm a positive reinforcement dog trainer. I first became interested in training while completing my Captive Wildlife Care and Education degree at Unity College. Animal training was a part of the degree and the more I learned about it the more I fell in love with the field and became fascinated by how animals learn. After graduating to keep my skills sharp I offered free training lessons to friends and co-workers. While doing that I also enrolled in Animal Behavior College to complete my certification specifically for dog training. After finishing my certification program I began working at a company called Urban Pooch teaching group class and offering private lessons. I started Dina's Doggos Training about a year ago and now I run that business in combination with working at Urban Pooch. I have a little over 5 years experience training dogs and I'm also a registered AKC evaluator. I also have 3 little guys of my own (Spy, Elton and Dusty) that will be heavily featured on the page in my training videos.
