Did you know that each prescription gets double-checked before we send it home? A technical team member will fill your medication, then the label and directions get double-checked. While this might not seem like a lot of work, it really does take time. Which is why we ask for 48-72 hours notice for refills. We do not have any dedicated pharmacy technicians; all meds are filled by the same techs drawing your cat's blood and checking in on them after surgery.

This National Veterinary Technician Week, we're celebrating the incredible Associates who make our hospitals thrive — like Karen, who began as a CSR and never stopped growing and like Joanne, who sought mentorship and support to obtain her VTNE.

At VCA, we're proud to champion our veterinary technicians every step of the way — offering mentorship, encouragement, and the resources to help you reach your full potential.

To every vet tech in our VCA family: thank you. What you do matters deeply — to our teams, to our patients, and to the pet owners who trust us with their most beloved companions.

You've seen our technicians at work in exam rooms, getting blood pressure readings and blood samples. You don't see all the hard work they do in the back. Processing samples for the lab and making sure everything is properly labeled can take quite a lot of time. Everything has to be documented in your cat's chart and with the lab to track the lab samples. Not only do samples need to be prepared, but the technical team has to make notes in your cat's chart after their appointment. So each appointment lasts much longer than the time our team spends in the room with you.

It's Veterinary Technician Week! We are spending the week thanking our amazing technical team for all their hard work. Our technical team members wear many different hats around here and we wouldn't be able to operate without them in a very literal sense.

The internet may love a chonky cat, but did you know being even two pounds over weight can cause health issues for your cat?
According to Cornell University five to 10 percent of cats today can be considered “overweight” and 40 percent fall into the “obese” category.

While those extra pounds may be adorable, they can seriously impact your cat's quality of life. Discuss weight loss options and recommended calorie counts with your veterinarian.

Every surgery starts long before the first incision. It starts with a veterinary technician who has spent years mastering their skills, anticipating needs, monitoring vitals, and showing up fully prepared for every patient who comes through the door.

Vet techs are the heart of every OR team, and their skill and dedication make a difference every single day. At some VCA specialty hospitals, we take surgical collaboration even further. Some of our teams include Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs) — professionals who earned specialized degrees specifically to support surgeons in the OR.

The result? Less time under anesthesia. Better outcomes. And a team that truly works as one. 💙

Because every patient is somebody's pet — and they deserve nothing less than the best.

Halloween will be here before you know it! Like any holiday there are extra steps you can take to keep your cat safe. Don't leave cats in costumes unattended and make sure they can't get their jaw stuck in any elastic straps. Keep candy, candy wrappers and other treats away from cats.

October is National Pet Wellness Month. All month we will be sharing tips on simple ways to keep your pet healthy during the year.
The first and best thing you can do for your cat is take them in for routine wellness visits. The general recommendation is at least once a year. Senior cats should be seen twice a year to help catch age related illness as soon as possible.

Meet Lacy, yesterday you met Robin, her sister.

These girls had a great first vet visit, in part because they were distracted by the best feather toy ever.
