April showers brings... Leptospirosis?? ☔️

With the increase in rainy weather and subsequent increased standing water, we are seeing a greater risk of Leptospirosis. Lepto is a zoonotic bacterial disease transmitted from the urine of infected hosts. In Chicago, it's primarily spread by rat urine. Your pet can pick it up by splashing in puddles or drinking standing water outside & also transmit it to you! 💦

Symptoms include fever, extreme lethargy, inappetance, muscle soreness/stiff gait, and more. 🤒

It is very important for your dog to stay up to date on it's yearly Lepto vaccine! You can also help mitigate spread by preventing your pet from drinking from puddles, avoiding walking through them, and cleaning their paws when coming in! 💉

Reach out to your veterinarian if you are worried about potential Lepto transmission!
