Acupuncture is often viewed as something outside of evidence-based care. But the science behind it may be more familiar than it seems.
Pain is not just processed in the brain. It starts at the periphery, where nerves respond to mechanical, electrical, and chemical signals. Most of the tools we use in practice focus on the spinal cord and brain. Acupuncture works earlier in that pathway, interacting with peripheral nerves at the site where pain begins.
It is not only about nerves, either. Those acupuncture points sit within a larger myofascial network, where connective tissue, interstitial fluid, and immune signaling all intersect. Even small inputs at that level can influence how pain is amplified, resolved, or sustained over time.
For patients with complex or chronic pain, that distinction matters. It is not a replacement for pharmacologic therapy, but another way to support the same systems we are already trying to manage.
