If your dog struggles with Separation Anxiety, it's not because you caused it. And feeling stuck is incredibly common.

When your life starts revolving around whether you can leave the house — when every errand, plan, or invitation feels complicated — it's exhausting. Add in the hundreds of tips, tricks, and "quick fixes" online that promise results but don't actually help, and it's easy to feel frozen and unsure what to do next.

You're not alone in this, even if it feels that way.
Separation Anxiety is real, it's hard, and it is treatable.

A calmer home and a less stressful life are possible — and you don't have to figure it out by yourself. Visit goodpoppi.com to get started today.

Dog training from a Certified Separation Anxiety Trainer (CSAT) and Puppy Specialist. Helping dogs and their people build confidence, independence, and harmony through positive, fear-free methods.

🚫 Leaving the TV or radio on does not cure separation anxiety.

If you're using the TV or radio to "trick" your dog into thinking you—or others—are home... think again! Dogs are much smarter than that! Just like we can tell the difference between real people and people on the TV or radio, they can too.

The truth is, Separation Anxiety isn't about boredom—it's about your dog feeling anxious because they are alone. The TV or radio doesn't address the root cause: being left by themselves.

That said, sounds can be helpful in the right context. A radio, TV (if it doesn't overstimulate your dog), or a sound machine can help mask outside noises from neighbors, traffic, or other apartment sounds—but that is not a fix for anxiety—it's just a way to make the environment a little calmer.

✅Separation Anxiety is treatable, but it takes the right training and support.

🍖🍪🦴Why food and treats are not recommended in Separation Anxiety training:

One of the most common suggestions people hear is:
“Have you tried giving the dog treats when you leave?”

While it seems helpful, using treats or food toys during absences is not recommended in Separation Anxiety protocols—and here’s why:

🔄The order of events matters.
When food appears right before an absence, it can become linked to being left alone. Instead of helping, the food toy can turn into a predictor of scary alone-time. Some dogs learn to avoid food toys or food altogether.

⏱️Food doesn’t last through the absence.
Most food toys are finished within 5–10 minutes. Once the food is gone, the dog is still alone.

🎭It can give a false picture of progress.
Food can suppress or mask stress responses, leading to a non-organic read on how the dog is truly handling time alone.

Think about it like this: If I'm stressed about a big interview tomorrow and you bring me ice cream to make me feel better, I will 100% eat the whole container. Does that mean my anxiety went away? Nope. I can still eat and be just as anxious. The same thing happens when we try to use food to help with alone-time. Just because our dogs are eating doesn't mean they are any less stressed.

When a dog has Separation Anxiety, they’re not being stubborn or bad. Their nervous system is in full panic mode. That’s why common fixes like puzzle toys, leaving the TV on, or special treats don’t work.

This is also why punishment is never the answer–you can’t punish panic away.

Real progress comes from addressing the underlying feelings behind the destruction and barking. When we shift from “How do I stop this behavior?” to “How can I help my dog feel safe?” we can start to take an effective approach to treating the Separation Anxiety.

🐾 Separation Anxiety is tough—but it’s treatable!

If your dog panics, cries, or shows stress when left alone, it can feel overwhelming. The good news? With the right training, support, and consistency, separation anxiety can improve—and your dog can learn to feel safe and calm on their own.

It’s not about punishment or “toughening up” your dog. It’s about understanding their fear and creating a supportive environment that helps them thrive.

Every dog is different, and progress may take time, but recovery is possible. With patience, guidance, and the right plan, you can help your dog feel secure—and give yourself peace of mind too.

Crating your dog is one of the most common suggestions we see for treating your dog’s Separation Anxiety — but the truth is, most of the time, it doesn’t help the problem and can actually add to their stress.

Separation Anxiety is a panic disorder in dogs, where being left alone triggers overwhelming fear and panic. Putting your dog in an enclosed space, such as a crate or a closed bathroom, can lead to increased panic and even self injury.

Finding out what environment works best for you
and your dog during alone time is a key part to starting Separation Anxiety training.
