[DAY 631 MISSING] THANK YOU everyone so much who read my last post and took action. I have so many comments to still sift though, but throughout the past two days I’ve been getting tagged left in right in comments across all social channels, saw emails were sent, etc.

Because of you, we caught the attention of the person who wrote in the anonymous letter. She unfortunately shares the dog she wrote about is not Zorro. While she didn’t share a photo (I assume because she’s worried I would post it on social media) through our back and forth communication, I feel she wouldn’t have reached out to me in the first place if the dog she had was Zorro. She has a very hard stance of not returning the dog to it’s owner, so even though I have no tangible proof I just feel there’s no need for her to have reached out to me in the first place then.

As you all know and have been commenting, this situation has actually become a larger thing than just me and Zorro. We’re all appalled by the likelihood that this anonymous person is going to keep her dog, although she knows the previous owner lost it and had been looking for him. We’re shocked the podcasters encouraged it. You guys have heard my side of the story though out the past 2 years and can sympathize and understand though my story, as dog lovers and as compassionate people, that this is just wrong.

Even though this dog likely isn’t zorro, I hope our comments and communication with this anonymous writer and The Toast has opened their eyes.

[DAY 629 MISSING] Yesterday, a handful of you amazing people sent me a podcast episode that aired on The Toast.

On the episode, the hosts read an anonymous letter from a listener who was asking advice about what to do about her dog. This listener shared she recently adopted a dog, who she is calling “Theo”, from a reputable shelter about 14 months ago. However, recently, she came across a social post of a picture of a dog that looked eerily similar to the dog she adopted. She quickly deduced this WAS the dog she adopted, realizing that the previous owner was searching for him and the dog she had adopted was lost by the previous owner, eventually landing at the animal shelter, which she then adopted the dog from.

There’s no way to know for sure if this is Zorro. But there are too many similarities in her story / timeline to my story and Zorro’s dissapreance timeline, that I cannot ignore this potential lead.

The podcast hosts advise the girl that she should keep the dog, but just give send an anonymous note to the previous owner to let her know the dog is safe. Regardless of if this dog is Zorro or not, this advice is enraging. I would hate for this new owner to have to give up a dog she also grew an attachment to - but to keep it with the knowledge it’s original owner is looking for him, hurting over his loss, searching every day for him, is almost as bad as stealing him outright. It would not be an easy conversation, and I really feel for the new owner, but it’s just shocking to me this is even a consideration that would cross her mind / would be the advice given from these podcasters.

I NEED YOUR HELP getting in touch with the podcast hosts. In the off chance this dog is Zorro, I would love if these hosts can share my side of the story to hopefully promote the new owner to reach out.

[585 DAYS MISSING] My dog, Zorro, has been missing since MARCH 18, 2021 after a sitter named Elizabeth Perry, hired via Rover.com, lost Zorro in the CHICAGOLAND AREA, and proceeded to lie about it for 5 days until I returned home from vacation.

I’m re-sharing the detailed story of Zorro’s disappearance in hopes someone sees this and has a tip they can share about Zorro’s whereabouts AND to continue to warn others about the dangers of Rover, to hopefully prevent this from ever happening to another family.

I miss Zorro and have thought about him every day for the past year and a half since he went missing. I will not stop fighting and searching for him and will not give up until he’s brought home safely. For those of you who have continued to hold on hope and help me throughout these times – thank you. I am still fighting because of you.

‼️THE FABRICATED STORY‼️ I dropped off Zorro on 3/18/21 at 8:30am in Lakeview, Chicago (IL) at the Elizabeth Perry’s house. Each day, Elizabeth would send me extremely detailed updates about Zorro’s wellbeing (see screenshots). Detailed to the point that she explained what food he was eating, how he was doing on walks, how he was interacting with other dogs/her family, etc. However, she claimed she couldn’t send photos because her phone broke. Then, on the morning of 3/22/21, Elizabeth texted me saying she forgot maintenance men were coming to her apartment that day and asked if she could take Zorro out for a while since he seemed stressed.

On 3/22 at night, Elizabeth then texted me again saying Zorro had JUST went missing. She explained that after the maintenance men came to her apartment, she decided to take Zorro to her boyfriend, Michael Dixon’s, house all the way in Waukegan, IL. Once at her boyfriends house, she said she put Zorro in the backyard but at some point, he managed to “push through the side gate and disappeared”.

I arrived back home on 3/23. On that same day, while I was still under the assumption Zorro was only missing for one day, a friend stumbled upon a missing dog post from Waukegan Animal Control, dated 3/18, with a picture Zorro. That’s when we realized everything was a lie.

❇️THE REAL STORY ❇️Turns out, what really happened is after I dropped off Zorro on 3/18 at 8:30am, maintenance was scheduled to come at some point that day to Elizabeth’s house (not on 3/22 in her fabricated story). So, immediately after I dropped off Zorro on 3/18, she then drove Zorro to Waukegan to go to her boyfriend’s house (all within 10 minutes of dropping him off, she didn’t even let him get acclimated and she decided it was a smart idea to drive an hour away without my permission knowing Zorro is super shy, scared of men). Once in Waukegan, she said Zorro then “pushed through the back gate” of her boyfriend’s yard and ran. She then called Animal Control to report Zorro missing around 10:20am but did not tell ME until 5 days later. She also told Animal Control and the Police I was “unreachable”, which is why they never had my number and couldn’t contact me. The timestamp of her call to the Waukegan Animal Control shows she lost Zorro just two hours after I had dropped him off in Lakeview (or at least claims to have lost him).

Once we found out the truth, I confronted Elizabeth and asked her why she lied for 5 days about my Zorro’s wellbeing. Her excuse was she had hoped to find Zorro before I came back home. This means if she ended up finding Zorro, she likely never would have told me he even went missing.

When a dog goes missing, the first couple days are crucial in finding that lost pet. She sabotaged those chances by lying to me.

❌ Rover.com’s “SUPPORT” ❌ I have found out this is not an uncommon situation on Rover. In each case, Rover provides the same MINIMAL level of support. All Rover did was offer a $100 reward towards my $5k reward (they’ve since upped their reward to $500 since my story gained media traction)... Posted on two lost dog websites, and paid a minimal fee for a service that conducts robocalls. They have since told me they will cut off communication with me “unless they hear positive news”. They have told media outlets they are “looking into this situation and doing everything they can to help me find my dog” however, since they made those statements to the media, they have done nothing. The social media community has been calling on them to make a change. Instead of responding, Rover disabled their comments on TikTok and have been deleting all the comments on Instagram.

Rover needs to take responsibility and should use their resources to help me find my dog. Even outside of my specific situation, they need to do more to make sure this doesn’t happen again. They need to better educate their sitters on what to do if they lose a pet. They need to have a step by step plan for the sitter and owner, outlining what to do if your pet goes missing. They need to better display on their website, the truth about their minimal background checks and limited protections provided by “Rover Guarantee”. They need to treat our pets as they are – family.

We will find Zorro. And along the way, I will continue to fight to showcase the truth about Rover, educate others on best practices when hiring a sitter, and demand that Rover make a change.

Today marks Zorro’s two-year birthday. He was only 9 months old when he went missing. It’s milestones like today that really make me realize how much time has passed since I last saw him.

I was reminded today of Zorro’s birthday because of a birthday celebration email from Petsmart.

As it often goes, time has helped me heal. I don’t feel the same pain and sadness on a day to day basis as I did that first year after his disappearance. But in some ways, I sometimes feel worse than I did in the moment when all this initially happened. Because now, I not only feel the pain of Zorro’s absence, but also feel a new feeling of guilt associated with the progress and healing I’ve made in the past year.

Because sometimes, the progress of healing, feels like I’m giving up. The absence of remembering his birthday, makes me feel like he’s being forgotten. Not responding to messages as quickly as before, makes me feel like I don’t have time for the search anymore. So even though “time helps everything”, I sometimes wish it didn’t.

However with that said, I am proud of my healing progress. I am proud of my search efforts and will to keep fighting. I will never stop looking for Zorro. And I will never stop holding hope that one day we’re reunited.

I will never be able to thank you all for helping me continue to search and fight to bring him home. I still get daily calls, messages and more, sharing potential tips of words or encouragement. Knowing a community of dog lovers and strangers around the world haven’t given me up, motivates me to keep going. Thank you thank you thank you ❤️

[DAY 333 MISSING] Happy Valentine’s Day, Zorro, wherever you are. We are thinking of you and love you each day.

It’s hard to believe we are nearing the year mark to Zorro’s disappearance. I am thankful for everyone who has continued to share our story, for all who are praying for us, for all who are warning others of platforms such as Rover, etc. Because of you, we are continuing keep Zorro’s name out there and spread his story everywhere.

I haven’t given up because you guys haven’t. I’m still hopeful that our work of spreading Zorro’s story wide and far, will one day lead us to him.

Early on in my search for Zorro, I had a kind dog owner reach out to me to share advice, guidance and support following an eerily similar situation that happened to her and her dogs, also involving a Rover sitter.

In May of 2020, Joy Collier left her two dogs, Charley and Nellie, with a Rover petsitter at her home in Goodyear, Arizona. Soon after she left for vacation, Joy received a dreaded call from her sitter informing her that her dogs had “disappeared” after being left alone in the sitter’s backyard. Almost two years later, and there has not been a SINGLE sighting of Charley or Nellie.

Joy was offered a minimal amount of compensation from Rover HOWEVER it was paired with an NDA, which would force Joy to never speak about her situation, Rover’s lack of support, etc. As seen in her post, Joy and her family have done SO much to search for their dogs. A meekly payout from Rover is not what their searching for.

Situation’s such as Joy’s and mine happen all too often with Rover. Instead of making necessary changes to its platform, Rover just repetitively tries to silence its customers from sharing the truth.

Please give BRING CHARLEY AND NELLIE HOME a follow and share their story with your friends, family and acquaintances if possible. You guys have been such a tremendous help to me, and I know that one day our efforts to spread stories such as mine and Joy’s will 1) eventually reunite us with our dogs and 2) will prevent this from ever happening to someone else.

[302 DAYS MISSING] – Zorro has been missing since 3/18 after a petsitter hired via lost him and lied about it for 5 days. We haven’t had any recent sightings or tips regarding Zorro’s whereabouts. It’s been 10 months way too long but we’re still looking and continuing to search for him.

Throughout these 10 months, I’ve been incredibly disappointed with Rover’s lack of response to my situation. To this day, all that they’ve done to support my search is offer a weak $100 reward (has since been upped to $500 following the media coverage Zorro’s story has garnered) and a small fee for a robocall service. They failed to provide any resources of what to do in a lost dog situation, did not help with any flyer printing, on-ground search efforts, social awareness, etc.

Instead of addressing my situation publicly or responding to any of the thousands of comments we’ve left them, begging for support, they instead decided to BLOCK me and many of you strangers helping me, disabled their comments on TikTok, and have deleted nearly every comment that shares the truth of what happened to Zorro. I’ve never heard of a large company, the size of Rover, with such a poor social strategy and customer support group. When CNN asked Rover why they’re deleting our comments on social media, they responded with something along the lines of “we don’t tolerate bullying”.

My goal has never and will never be to cancel Rover, or the petsitter I hired. My goal is to push Rover to make necessary changes to their app, to hopefully one day be the company they are currently false advertising as. They say they are a reliable pet sitting service with countless of trusted sitters and walkers on their app. However as seen in my situation, that is not always the case.
Rover does not conduct adequate background checks on their sitters. Only after reading the fine print did I realize their “background check” solely checks to see that the sitter is not on any s*x offender registry, aren’t on any terrorist watchlists, and aren’t in the NATIONAL Criminal Database (not federal!!) for any “disqualifying criminal offenses”.

I will continue spreading news about Zorro with goals to firstly, bring him home one day soon, and secondly, to warn other pet owners regarding the truth behind Rover. I KNOW there can be good sitters on the app, but until Rover tightens their screening, vetting and hiring process (amongst many other issues), I urge all pet owners to use Rover with caution.

If you do decide to use Rover, here are a couple tips I encourage each pet owner to do before hiring a sitter –

1️⃣ Conduct an in-person interview with the sitter before hiring them. I did this and am glad I was able to meet the sitter in-person, see her home and area where my dog would be staying.

2️⃣ During the in-person interview, ask to take a photo of their license and conduct your own background check. Rover screens their sitters last name, only allowing you to see the first initial of their last name. This makes it difficult for customers to conduct their own background check. In my situation, I didn’t know my sitters last name until after she lost Zorro. Once I obtained her full name, through a quick Google search I found some shocking articles regarding her potential criminal past. Had I conducted my own search prior, I likely would not have hired her.

3️⃣ Do more than solely read the sitters review on Rover.com – ask for phone numbers of their references, etc. I found that when a customer has a bad experience with the sitter, the only way to be refunded is if Rover/the sitter “cancel” the sitting on the app. It will then appear on the app as if you never hired the sitter, therefore, removing your access to leave a review on the sitter’s profile. Because of this, there are MANY truthful reviews that are missing from sitters’ profiles. Rover does a great job of making it difficult for customers to leave these sorts of reviews.

4️⃣ Ask for daily photos of your pet while they’re in the care of a Rover sitter. My sitter told me she would send me daily photos, however, early on in the stay told me her phone was broken so she was only messaging me through we web app. Because of this I didn’t question when they lack of photos weren’t coming in. I also didn’t want to appear like a crazy dog owner so I tried to remain calm and trust all written updates.

[DAY 273 MISSING] Zorro is out there somewhere. We haven't given up hope, haven't stopped looking and have definitely not forgotten about him.

Throughout the past 9 months, we still have not had a single confirmed sighting. We believe Zorro was stolen and potentially sold to someone who was unknowing he comes from a loving home.

If someone bought Zorro, they are not at fault. We THANK them for taking care of him for as long as they have. All we want is to be reunited with Zorro to bring him back to his original home.

I know you all have continued to help share the news about Zorro and that everyone is holding on hope alongside me and my family. Please help get this flyer out once more before the holidays, to hopefully reach that one person who can come forward with news regarding Zorro's whereabouts.

[236 DAYS MISSING] Zorro has been missing since MARCH 18 when a petsitter, named Elizabeth Perry, hired from Rover.com lost him. Elizabeth was hired to watch Zorro in her home in Lakeview, Chicago but without my permission, drove Zorro to her boyfriend’s house in Waukegan, IL just one-hour after drop-off on the 18th, where she then lost him. For the next 5 days, Elizabeth provided false, extremely detailed, daily updates of Zorro’s wellbeing (she claimed her phone was broken, which is why I didn’t question the lack of photos). When I returned from my trip, she told me Zorro had JUST gone missing. I ended up finding out Zorro really went missing just two hours after I had dropped him off, due to a missing dog flyer on FB that was posted by the Waukegan Animal Control.

8 months later, we have yet to have a confirmed sighting of Zorro. There was never any video footage of Zorro in Waukegan in any of the Ring cameras, office security footage, etc. None of the boyfriends’ neighbors ever saw Zorro. There has not been any confirmed video/photo evidence of Zorro running loose, with a new owner, etc.

In JULY, we received a potential tip that Zorro could be in Paramus, New Jersey, following a potential sighting at Van Saun Park. The potential tip leads us to believe Zorro could have been sold to a couple in NJ. The seller was a man on Craigslist, claiming he adopted the brown and white doodle-looking dog from a shelter in Chicago, but could no longer care for the dog and needed to sell it immediately. The new owners (“The Couple”) are described as Caucasian, mid-30s, female is 5’7ish, male is 6’1ish. Please note we do not know if this is really Zorro. Therefore, we are continuing to investigate ANY tip we receive.

Our story has been featured in CNN Business, Inside Edition, Fox 32, CBS 2, News 12 New Jersey, Daily Voice New Jersey, Patch.com, and more. However, despite these thousands of media impressions and millions of social impressions, we still have not found Zorro. HOWEVER, we are getting closer to finding him. With each piece of coverage, and each social share, a new person learns about my story and can keep their eye out for Zorro.

Someone out there knows something. I am begging you to PLEASE come forward if you know where Zorro is. I am offering a $5,000 reward to anyone who can provide a tip or any information that brings Zorro home safely. No questions asked.

⭐️Fur: Very tight curls, potential for fur to be extremely matted by now, or shaved down (see photos for hair variants)
⭐️Color: Brown and white spotted. White snout, mark on top of head, chest, legs and tail. Brown ears, mask-like shape around eyes, and brown spotting down spine.
⭐️Microchipped: Yes!
⭐️Demeanor: Shy at first, will not naturally approach a stranger (even prior to being lost). Loves his family and friends in his “inner” circle.

[DAY 227 MISSING] Happy Halloween! We are still looking for Zorro. We haven’t received any recent updates regarding the potential lead in New Jersey but are still exploring the possibility he could be in the Bergen County Area.

The original tip came back in July, after a fellow dog owner met a couple at Van Saun Park in Paramus, NJ who had a dog that resembled Zorro. The couple told the witness that they had recently purchased the dog from a man off of Craigslist, who was desperate to get rid of the dog. The man had stated he got the dog in Chicago, but could no longer care for him and needed to rehome him asap. We cannot confirm if this story is true, but it’s the strongest lead we’ve had in the past couple months, so we’re exploring it to all ends still.

PLEASE STAY VIGILANT TODAY – it’s very likely Zorro could be spotted walking with his new “owners” or at the door while kids trick-or-treat. Keep your eyes open and stay on the lookout for him!
