🎉 VET TECH WEEK🤩
DAY 5 : FAN-TASTIC FRIDAY!

It’s Friday, and apparently our techs have decided that regular work attire is way too boring. So, they’re showing off their favorite obsessions - sports teams, movies, games, books, and whatever fandom has taken over their entire personality. 👀🏈🎬🎮📚

Underneath the costumes, chaos, and questionable fashion choices, there’s something we’re absolutely serious about: our technicians are a HUGE part of what makes Prairie Hills so strong.💙🐾

They’re providing compassionate care, keeping patients comfortable, supporting our doctors, catching the little details, calming nervous pets, and somehow managing to juggle approximately a million things at once without growing an extra set of hands, unfortunately! 🙃

Their knowledge, dedication, teamwork, and heart make a difference in every patient they care for and every family we serve. Prairie Hills wouldn’t be the same without them and we’re incredibly lucky to have a team that brings so much skill, compassion, and personality to the table.

So here’s to our FAN-tastic techs, their favorite obsessions, and making it through another week of doing the most! 🥳💙

Think you know what the obsessions are? Drop your guesses in the comments! ⬇️

🌈 VET TECH WEEK 🎨
DAY 4 - TIE DYE THURSDAY!

We're bringing ALL the colors today for Tie Dye Day! ✌️ Speaking of ALL THE THINGS.... if there's one thing our technicians know how to do, it's wear A LOT of hats! 🤠

Our techs are doing WAY more than you might think! 🐾

💉 Phlebotomists: Drawing blood and collecting samples for testing. Sometimes those tiny or dehydrated veins take a little extra patience - not always an easy feat.

🩻 X-ray technicians: Positioning patients of all shapes and sizes (and activity levels!) and capturing diagnostic images to help our doctors identify injuries, illnesses, and what's happening beneath the surface.

🦷 Dental assistants: Helping prepare for and assist with dental cleanings, including scaling away plaque and tartar buildup, polishing teeth, and assisting with dental procedures. They also monitor patients under anesthesia throughout the process to help keep them safe and comfortable.

🔬 Diagnostics: Running tests, examining various samples, and helping get answers that guide your pet's treatment. From bloodwork and urinalysis to f***l testing and skin scrapes (and more!), these results are an important piece of the puzzle!

🩺 And that's STILL not everything! Our techs assist with surgeries, making surgical packs, administering medications, monitoring anesthesia, collecting patient histories, educating owners, and they help keep the entire clinic moving.

The truth is, our techs are skilled professionals who combine medical knowledge, technical ability, critical thinking, and compassion every single day. They have to know what they're doing, understand why they're doing it, recognize when something isn't right, and adapt when a patient throws them a curveball. And they do it all while juggling multiple patients, priorities, and O'malley's shenanigans. 😜💪

🦓🐍 VET TECH WEEK 🐅🦒
DAY 3 - WILD WEDNESDAY!

It's Wild Wednesday at the clinic today! Let's be honest, working in vet medicine is already a little wild...why not amp it up a little bit? 😂

Today is extra special because it's also National Reptile Awareness Day🦎🐢 And we've got some exciting news…Prairie Hills is now seeing reptiles! That's right, our patient family is getting a little more scaly!🎉

From dogs and cats, pocket pets, feathered friends coming in for nail and wing trims, and now reptiles...our vet techs get to work with a variety of animals - keeping them on their toes! 💪
Every species comes with its own anatomy, behaviors, handling techniques, and medical needs. What works for one patient might not work for the next. Our techs are ready to adjust their approach, think on their feet, and learn something new along the way.

That's what makes our veterinary technicians so incredible. They don't just show up and do the same thing every day. They continuously build their knowledge, sharpen their skills, learn new techniques, and adapt to the needs of each individual patient. Sometimes that means stepping outside their comfort zone, asking questions, researching something unfamiliar, and figuring out the best way to help an animal that communicates very differently from the patients they're used to seeing. 🩺💙

Help us show our veterinary technicians some love this week! And if you have a reptile, bird, or pocket pet at home, tell us what kind in the comments! ⬇️

🐶🩺VET TECH WEEK!🩺🐱
DAY 2 - TACKY TUESDAY!

Behind all those cute pet photos and happy tail wags is a whole lot of hard work that doesn’t always get the spotlight. So let’s talk about the down and dirty side of being a veterinary technician! 👀

What are some of the not-so-glamorous perks of this career?
💅 Nail trims, ear cleanings and a**l gland expressions are just a few of the *lovely* things that technicians take care of.
🐕‍🦺 Restraining patients while using Fear Free techniques to minimize stress and make their experience as positive as possible.
💪 Heavy lifting, awkward positions, and knees and backs that take an absolute BEATING.
💙 Taking the time to build trust with every patient, learning their personalities, recognizing their fears, and figuring out what works best to make appointments more comfortable for them.
📝 Recording detailed patient histories, documenting symptoms, tracking changes, and entering what feels like a MILLION notes into medical records so the entire team has the information they need.

And let's not forget that this job comes with real risks. Bites, scratches, kicks, and other injuries are part of a reality many veterinary professionals face. Even the sweetest pets can react out of fear, pain, or stress. That's why proper handling, reading body language, using appropriate precautions, and knowing when to change our approach are SO important. A vet tech's job isn't just about being the holder for the vet, it's about making pets comfortable and keeping everyone safe. 🐾

Our techs are skilled professionals who juggle medical knowledge, physical demands, emotional connections, and safety concerns every single day. And they do it because they CARE. 💙

So today, while they're rocking their tackiest outfits, let's give some love to the veterinary technicians who get their hands dirty, their scrubs covered in fur, and their hearts invested in every patient who walks through our doors. 🐶🐱

🐾💙VET TECH WEEK💙🐾
DAY 1 - PJ DAY!

We’re kicking off Veterinary Technician Week in the comfiest way possible…in our pajamas. 😴 Caring for patients is hard work, and who says you can’t do it in your favorite onesie? 😂

We’re shining the spotlight on our incredible techs and one of the many things they do behind the scenes - surgery prep and anesthesia monitoring.

🩺 Before a patient ever makes it to the operating table, our techs are hard at work first thing in the morning! 🐶🐱

✂️ Shaving & prepping: Carefully clipping the surgical site and sterilizing the area to help reduce the risk of infection.

💉 Catheter Placement: Placing IV catheters to provide access for fluids and medications, helping keep patients hydrated, supported, and ready for surgery!

💊 Medication administration: Giving prescribed pre-operative medications to help patients relax, manage pain, and prepare for anesthesia.

🫁 Intubation: Safely and properly placing an endotracheal tube to help maintain a secure airway and deliver oxygen and anesthetic gases during surgery.

💙 Anesthesia monitoring: Keeping a close eye on patients throughout their procedures by monitoring vital signs, breathing, heart rate, oxygen levels, and depth of anesthesia. Our techs are there every step of the way to help keep patients safe and comfortable from the moment they're asleep until they are ready to go home!

And that's just the beginning! From preparing patients for surgery to monitoring them throughout their procedures, our techs play a HUGE role in providing safe, compassionate care. 🐾

So while they're comfy, cozy, and rocking their pajamas today, they're still bringing their A-game as usual for your fur kiddos! 💪

Help us kick off the week by showing our amazing veterinary technicians some love in the comments! ⬇️

🐈‍⬛ IT'S FERAL CAT DAY: BIG PERSONALITIES & LOTS OF EAR TIPS!

You know the type… the neighborhood cat who watches you and disappears the second you make eye contact. Then looks at you like YOU'RE the suspicious one. 👀

So, how can we help our neighborhood feline friends?👇

✂️ TRAP, NEUTER, RETURN
TNR is one of the most effective ways to manage community cat populations! Cats are humanely trapped by caregivers or with the help of TNR programs. They receive their spay/neuter surgery, required vaccines, and an ear tip before being returned to their original outdoor territory.
What's an ear tip?? It's the universal sign that a cat has been sterilized through a TNR program! Easy to see from a distance!

❤️ Support local shelters, rescues, and TNR organizations through donations, volunteering, or fostering.

🥣 Provide food and fresh water responsibly, where permitted, and keep feeding areas clean to avoid attracting unwanted wildlife.

🏠 Provide appropriate outdoor shelters when possible, especially during extreme weather.

🚫 Never relocate a community cat on your own. Cats can be strongly bonded to their territory, and relocation can put them at risk.

🩺 KEEP YOUR OWN PETS SAFE!
Community cats and owned pets can sometimes share more than a neighborhood.
Here's how to protect your furry family:
🐾 Keep preventions and vaccinations up to date.
🐾 Keep your cats indoors or provide secure outdoor enclosures.
🐾 Avoid direct contact with unfamiliar cats, their f***s, and contaminated soil.
🐾 If your pet is bitten or scratched, contact your veterinarian promptly. Bite wounds can become infected, even when they look small!

🐈 Many feral cats are most active around dawn and dusk.

🐈‍⬛ Feral doesn't mean ANGRY! It usually describes a cat's level of socialization with people, not its personality.

🐾 Kittens born outdoors may be socialized to people more easily than adult feral cats,. Spaying and neutering as soon as possible is the best way to control the community cat population.

💙 Got a community cat situation? Give us a call and we can help point you in the best direction.🐾

🐾This week we’re shining the spotlight on Alyvia, one of our animal-loving team members who is already taking steps toward her lifelong dream!

Alyvia started shadowing in our clinic this past summer and quickly fell in love with the environment. When an opportunity opened up to join our boarding team as a kennel technician, she couldn’t pass it up! 🐶✨

💬 “For as long as I can remember, I’ve only wanted to be a veterinarian. I love the idea of being able to save animals or help them as much as I can.”

And we love seeing that passion in action! 💙 Every experience is another opportunity to learn, grow, and make a difference in the lives of the animals we care for.

A little about Alyvia:
📍 She’s originally from Cheyenne.
📺 Criminal Minds is her show of choice.
📚 She enjoys getting lost in a good book.
🐱 Loves snuggling with her cat.
🥾 When she’s not working, you might find her out hiking.
🦎 And she’s a proud crested gecko mom of two!

We’re so excited to have Alyvia on our team and can’t wait to see where her passion for veterinary medicine takes her! 🩺🐾

Help us give Alyvia a warm welcome in the comments! 👇💙

We know… those puppy-dog eyes are HARD to resist. 🥹 And when your cat starts acting like they've never been fed a day in their life (despite eating 12 minutes ago), it's tempting to give in. 🍪

⚖️ Here's the thing: Its pet obesity awareness day and a little extra weight can have a big impact on your pet's health. Carrying excess weight can increase the risk of joint problems, diabetes, heart and respiratory strain, and other health concerns.

How can we help our furry family members stay fit? 👇

🥕 Treats count toward daily calories! Try pet-safe options like plain carrots, green beans, or small pieces of cucumber. Keep portions small, and remember that treats should generally make up NO MORE than 10% of your pet's daily calories.

🥣 Free-feeding and those extra scoops can add up quickly! Measure meals, follow your vet's feeding recommendations, and account for treats. If your pet needs to lose weight, we can help determine the right diet and calorie goal.

🎾 Daily walks, interactive play, food puzzles, fetch, and enrichment activities help keep pets physically active and mentally engaged.

🐱 Indoor cats need exercise, too! Wand toys, climbing spaces, puzzle feeders, and short play sessions throughout the day can help get those little paws moving.

🩺 KNOW THEIR HEALTHY WEIGHT
Every pet is different! Breed, age, body condition, and medical history all play a role. Our team can help you determine whether your pet is at a healthy weight and create a safe, realistic plan if they need to slim down a little.

A healthy weight isn't about loving your pet less or withholding treats. It's about showing them love in ways that help them live longer, happier, more comfortable lives. 💙

So, today, give your pet a little extra playtime, choose a healthy snack, and maybe swap that *third* treat for a belly rub. 😉🐾

Questions about your pet's weight or nutrition? Give us a call. We'd love to help! Our lobby scale is always open if you need to do a quick drive by weigh in to help keep track of their weight. 🐶🐱
