We have had a lot of patients coming through planning to travel without brand inspections and wanted to share the whatโs, whoโs, whyโs, and howโs of brand inspections.
๐๐๐๐ฉ ๐๐จ ๐ ๐๐ง๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ฃ๐จ๐ฅ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ: an inspection of a horse or cow to establish legal ownership of the animal or group of animals. To perform an inspection you have to be certified by the department of agriculture, veterinarians can become certified inspectors.
๐๐๐ค ๐จ๐๐ค๐ช๐ก๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ง๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ฃ๐จ๐ฅ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐:
Horses and cattle, even if they donโt have a brand.
๐๐๐ฎ ๐จ๐๐ค๐ช๐ก๐ ๐๐ฃ ๐๐ฃ๐๐ข๐๐ก ๐๐ ๐๐ง๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ฃ๐จ๐ฅ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐:
Horses or cows moving across state lines (for sale or travel), horses or cows going to a special sale or public livestock market, cattle being sold, going to a feedlot or slaughter facility, it is recommended for horses undergoing a private sale especially if they are not registered.
๐๐ค๐ฌ ๐๐ค๐๐จ ๐ ๐๐ง๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ฃ๐จ๐ฅ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐ ๐ฅ๐ก๐๐๐:
Contact a brand inspector, either a Field Livestock Inspector or Certified Veterinarian, provide documentation of legal ownership, have animal or animals inspected.
๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฏ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐:
๐ฎ Animals do not have to be branded to be brand inspected, but you do have to provide proof of ownership.
๐ด Horses can have a lifetime, annual or one way brand inspection.
๐ฎ There are three types of branding irons: conventional, electric and freeze. Freeze branding can be performed by doctors at our clinic.
