I took a bunch of pictures of Wybie in his boots to show off his new blue straps. Looking through them, the lighting is terrible and the angles I was contorting to made everything look SO wonky. Scrolling through my failures, I found this little treasure.

A glorious heel-first landing. A heel first landing means that the horse’s digital cushion is “taking the beating.” Its whole purpose is to absorb concussion. A horse landing flat (or toe first 😵‍💫) is not loading their hoof correctly, which over time can cause some pretty gnarly bone changes. Jagged ground, like we have right now on the track, can make horses cautious about their landings. Giving the bottom of the foot something to dull that “stab” gives the horse their confidence back; boots provide that protection while still allowing the caudal part of the hoof to do its job.

Hi friends! Would there be any interest in regularly-scheduled equine track tours/talks? These would be hosted here in Chestertown, MD and each could include another discussion about another topic.
