Bird Medicine and Surgery Welcome to Bird Medicine and Surgery and Kersting Veterinary Hospital! We are a full service veterinary office here to serve your pet.

Full service veterinary hospital for birds, dogs, cats, small mammals and reptiles. We offer a 24 hour emergency service for exotic pets as well as existing dog and cat clients. Dr. Mitchell Canada represented Bird Medicine and Surgery this year and attended the 47th annual Association of Avian Veterinary seminar down in Austin, Texas for five days of lectures and wet labs. Veterinarians from all over the world, gather once a year to gain the latest knowledge in medicine and surgery and research for parrots. Dr. Canada was excited about Borna virus testing that can be done in hospital without being sent out to a commercial lab. He greatly enjoyed his chicken Ultrasound Lab and surgery of the chicken reproductive system and digestive system. He has definitely come back a wiser veterinarian! We will be sharing all the latest information at one of the upcoming Gateway parrot club meetings.

Dr. Pritchett will be attending the VMX seminar in Orlando to obtain her training and education in avian and exotic medicine and surgery. Her labs will be on Rabbit Surgery and Avian Endoscopy.

Boarding for your Bird? We Say Vacation for your Bird! 🦜

We love to interact with all of our boarders in ways that are personal to them! One of Pickles’s favorite things is playing peekaboo right before bed! We have so much fun getting to know each and every bird and watching their personalities shine as they stay with us🥰.

During their “vacation” stay, we offer music, tv, toys, treats, and specialized care for each bird. They get to see other members of their feathered family which we believe is very mentally enriching as well!

Don’t have a bird? We board dogs, cats, and small mammals! We also make accommodations for birds other than parrots! Most recently we’ve boarded chickens, waterfowl, pigeons, doves, finches, and toucan.

If you’re going on vacation, having home renovations, or simply just gone for the day and need someone to look after your feathered family member, we at Kersting’s Veterinary are here to meet all of your needs!

Veterinary Care can be a Fashion Statement😎

Harley was in yesterday for quite unusual looking spa day! Laser therapy can be used to help animals recover after injuries, ease joint pain, and keep them feeling comfortable in an very noninvasive way 🙂 This therapy helps in cellular repair, circulation, releasing endorphins, and decreased inflammation.
Harley is wearing her super cool PPE for her therapy as the laser can harm your eyes if exposure occurs… she makes healing fashionable 🥰
Everyone in the room must wear their specialized protective eyewear, so we all can leave happy and healthy!

🐾 Help Us Find Forever Homes for Tahyla’s Babies! 🐾

During the warmer months, outdoor cats have tons of litters… and sweet Tahlya was adopted after being found outside herself. Her caring owner noticed that something seemed a little off about her very soon after lovingly bringing her home. Yesterday, at just 9 months old, we were able to confirm that Tahlya is pregnant with an estimated 5-6 kittens herself! ❤️

Now we’re preparing for a whole litter of tiny lives that will soon need safe, loving forever homes. Our goal is to make sure each of Tahyla’s kittens grows up surrounded by the love, care, and commitment they deserve. 🏡🐱

If you or someone you know is looking to add a kitten to your family, please keep these little ones in mind! We’ll share more updates as they arrive and grow.

In the meantime, please share this post to help us reach potential adopters. Every share could help one of these babies find their forever family. 💕🐾

This sassy little girl is Beakers. Today she had an exploratory surgery to further investigate a potential mass within her abdomen. Yes, chickens can get surgery too!

OUR CALIFORNIA BIRD!!! 🦜🌴

Paulie has been boarding with us here at Kersting for about 3 months now and has become our unofficial, behind the scenes, mascot!! Paulie loves dance parties, showing off his big wings, bark at anything besides a dog, chewing on wood, and grapes… we know this guy really well 🥰. Today his owners came to pick him up leaving us with such a bitter sweet goodbye. Paulie has bornavirus and was separated from other birds during his stay here at the clinic, but all of the attention in the treatment area was worth the bird isolation. He greeted every client who came back and made everyone smile. We’re going to miss Paulie so much!!!
His owner is moving to California with him and we will no longer be his veterinary office.
We appreciate all of the owners who entrust us with their pets and love to be a part of their lives in any way that we can!!

Happy Sunday!

While birds are boarding at the clinic, we acknowledge the importance of enrichment and interaction!
This is a video of Chica, a frequent boarding bird, who is going to town with her flappy hour enrichment toy!
Birds are exceptionally intelligent and need lots of mental stimulation to keep them happy and healthy. Surprisingly, not all birds even know how to play with toys! Getting creative with other things to get all of their 5 senses working is a great thing to keep in mind. Training sessions, puzzles, textures, sounds, smells, and so much more can help your bird thrive!

Today we celebrate all of the beloved pets who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge on this Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day 🌈

The Kersting team is incredibly honored to be a part of the lives of the animals entrusted to our care — whether they have fur, feathers, scales, fins, or whiskers. Every patient has a unique personality, a special place in their family, and a story worth remembering.

We have the privilege of caring for them through every stage of their lives — celebrating the good days, helping through the difficult ones, and, when the time comes, providing comfort and dignity as they reach the end of their journey.

Saying goodbye is one of the hardest parts of caring for your pets. While we may not have known every patient for their entire life, we are grateful for the time we were given with them and for the trust their families placed in us. We feel the loss, too. Each animal leaves behind a paw print, feather, scale, whisker, or fin-shaped imprint on our hearts. 🌈

Today, we honor the lives of those we’ve had the privilege to care for and the families who loved them so deeply.

To all of our past patients: you were loved, you were cherished, and you will never be forgotten.
