UPDATE: SAFE 🎉
They survived by hiding. Now they need someone to teach them how to live.
📍 CHESTERFIELD COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER
For the past month and a half, three tiny puppies have been surviving in a storm ditch.
They were too smart for the traps. Too frightened to come close. But one Good Samaritan refused to give up on them, feeding them, earning their trust little by little, and giving them a reason to believe that not every human meant danger.
Today, finally, they were safely confined and brought to the shelter.
And while we’re incredibly grateful they are safe, now the hard part begins.
A loud, busy, open-intake shelter is not the place these puppies need to learn that the world can be a safe place. Our staff will do everything we can to help them acclimate, but the reality is that these babies need quiet, patience, one-on-one attention, and experienced foster homes.
They have spent so long in survival mode that they lean heavily on each other for confidence. Ultimately, they will need to be separated so they can learn to trust and navigate the world on their own.
Meet Whisper, Wisp & Willow.
They are only about 4 months old, Doberman/Shepherd mixes, and weigh approximately 25–35 lbs each.
Whisper and Wisp, both boys, are more shut down than their sister Willow. They aren’t trying to hurt anyone, they are trying to get away. They run, hide, and freeze when approached because they simply don’t know what humans are asking of them yet.
We don’t want to call them feral. They aren’t. They have already shown that they can build trust. They are just extremely unsocialized puppies who have spent much of their short lives learning how to survive instead of learning how to be dogs.
And that means there is still SO much hope here.
But hope needs a place to grow.
Rescues, can you help us find their way out?
Experienced fosters, could you open your home to the puppy who has never known what it feels like to be safe?
They don’t need someone to “fix” them overnight.
They need someone willing to sit quietly, be patient, let them decompress, and show them, one small step at a time, that they don’t have to spend the rest of their lives running from the world.
They were finally caught.
Now let’s make sure being caught is the beginning of their story, not the end of it.
🚨 RESCUE ONLY at this time due to extreme flight risk and the need to complete temperament evaluations.
