This is the story of “what rescuers do every day other than rescue”. Well we work full-time job(s) probably multiple… at least in my case. Hi! My name is Calla… I take on way too much, experience compassion fatigue on a daily basis, I run anesthesia at a veterinary hospital, I am also the rescue/shelter tech for a dog rescue. At the end of the day I have close to 30+ messages that are unanswered, I have 10+ emails to respond to if I can even get to them, I have multiple group chats going to make sure all of our public location kitties are doing well, I have multiple orders to place for food, litter, medical supplies… you name it. I have to fundraise, plan the next event, get ready for future events, beg, plead on Facebook 24/7 for funds, respond to urgent messages in between prepping an animal for surgery or treating a sick patient. Oh right I forgot… I am also housesitting 4 dogs, oh wait that’s right I have a second housesitting job of stopping in to take care of some cats. Oh my gosh wait that’s right I also have two bottle raised kittens on top of that, geez how can I forget that. So long story short… when WE and by WE I also mean my amazing team & volunteers don’t get back to you in a timely fashion please think of this post. It is not on purpose… it’s the fact that when we get home at 9 or 10 at night, we just want shut our brains off before we have to get up to do it all over again tomorrow. I get told probably multiple times a week “I don’t know how you do it” and my response is “I don’t really know either” because it’s not normal, our lives are not normal. The drama, the fatigue, the high cortisol levels, the lack of sleep, the CONSTANT stress, the compassion fatigue, the being made to feel like you are the most horrible person on earth, the unnecessary drama between rescues, the lack of funds, the lack of sponsors, the lack of big time donors. It’s amazing we are all still pushing on and I know for a fact there are a ton of fellow rescuers out there who feel the same. So once again if we do not respond to you please know it is not by any means on purpose. We are all trying to do our best while keeping hundreds of little lives alive & fed. On a last note, we owe our two rescue vets close to $3,800 by the end of the month for our monthly total. Yoda going to the emergency vet really put us behind as his bill at our primary vet was $600 before he went to the emergency room. Any help would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
A very tired compassion fatigued rescuer
*pictured is Bean, a sweet little dude who I recovered today after his front leg was amputated. He was brought into the office by a Good Samaritan after being hit by a car and is currently in the care of Keri Julian with the Cat Angel Network… and yes Tracie Lynn used a little sock bo**ie to keep his one ear warm😭*
