At CHS part of our Workplace Culture Policy is focus on self care. Animal Welfare and Veterinary Medicine are two careers where burnout rates are the highest. We love our team and we REALLY love when our community supports them, too!

Big thank you to clubpilatesgreatbridge for hosting us for a private class this evening!

Our kennel is full of hopeful shelter graduates at CHS… and each adorable face is ready to move out of student housing. 🎓🐾

Some of these dogs have been cramming for finals (learning manners, leash walking, and how not to lose their minds over snack time). Others are just counting down the days until they can trade kennel life for couches, backyards, and someone who thinks they’re the greatest thing ever.

The Class of 2026 is full of big personalities, loyal sidekicks, professional snugglers, and at least a few dogs who would absolutely peak at recess.

Check out their full bios and fill out an application on our website, www.chesapeakehumane.org or stop by our shelter 12-4pm Tuesday-Sunday.

Graduation season is still in full swing at CHS, and honestly… the cattery class of 2026 has a LOT of personality. 🎓🐾

Some are class clowns. Some are tiny divas. Some are quietly judging everyone from the back of the room. And some are just waiting for the right person to finally notice them. Their bios and adoption applications are available on our website - www.chesapeakehumane.org/adopt and unlike actual yearbooks, these seniors are hoping someone takes them home.

Join us on Saturday, May 30 from 11am–2pm at Bea Arthur Dog Park in downtown Norfolk for PETA’s multishelter adopt-a-thon featuring adoptable pets from shelters and rescues across Hampton Roads.

We’ll be bringing some wonderful CHS dogs who are ready to meet their future families, and there will be plenty of wagging tails, community partners, and even free vegan burgers while supplies last.

Whether you’re actively looking to adopt or just want to support local shelters and spend the afternoon surrounded by dogs, we’d love to see you there.

With graduation season upon us, we’d like to introduce some of our hopefully-soon-to-be shelter graduates ...starting with Speck. 🎓

Speck is a 1-year-old pittie mix with a LOT of enthusiasm for life. People? Loves them. Toys? Absolutely. Treats? Obviously. Other dogs? Yep. Dinner time? His favorite subject.

What Speck does not love is shelter life. We’ve tried extra enrichment, more play groups, puzzle toys, training opportunities, and even medication to help him settle, but what Speck really needs is a home where he can finally relax and just be somebody’s dog.

He’s impossible to miss with his unique markings and adorable crooked tail, and we’re confident that in the right home, Speck is going to thrive.

🏆 Senior Superlative:
Most Likely to Drink a Pot of Coffee Before 8am

If you’re looking for a dog who will keep life interesting, make you laugh, and love you with his whole heart, Speck is ready to graduate from shelter life for good.

Because of you, the journey continues.

Yesterday, you showed up in a powerful way for animals who needed a second chance. You helped fuel the miles that bring pets from uncertainty to safety, from waiting to belonging.

Every gift, every share, every moment of support helped move this work forward.

Because of you, more animals will make it here.
More will receive the care they need.
More will find the homes they deserve.

And somewhere soon, another journey will begin, one that leads to a life changed forever.

From all of us at Chesapeake Humane Society, thank you for helping us Drive Hope Forward.

“When we take animals into our adoption program from other shelters, we do it for the animals, but we’re also there for the people behind them.

When we pull away with a van full of animals, we’re not just thinking about the lives getting another chance. We’re thinking about the ones left behind and the team still carrying that weight.

Creating space means fewer impossible decisions, less pressure to meet numbers, and a little more room for them to keep showing up for the animals still in their care.”

— Alyssa Desena, Assistant Shelter Manager

Every transport creates more than second chances. It creates breathing room, relief, and hope for entire shelter teams.

When Fluffer Nutter was found wandering the streets of Portsmouth, he had a serious leg injury. At first, it didn’t seem urgent. But after transferring to Chesapeake Humane Society and receiving X-rays at our clinic, the full picture became clear. Fluffer Nutter had a fractured leg, a fractured pelvis, and was severely heartworm positive.

He needed immediate, complex care. His leg could not be saved.

Thanks to our team, our clinic, and the ability to bring him here when he needed it most, Fluffer Nutter underwent amputation surgery and began his recovery.

He quickly became a staff favorite, even making a special appearance on Coast Live. And before long, he found exactly what every animal deserves. A home.

Today, Fluffer Nutter is thriving. Running. Cuddling. Living the life he was always meant to have.

His journey started with a single trip.

Today, you can help make that journey possible for the next animal in need.

Drive Hope Forward.
