Hey there, Delilah, what’s it like
Being the cutest cattle dog in sight?

You’re a little nervous, that much is true,
New people and places can feel like a lot to you.
But underneath that cautious face,
There’s a sweet girl just waiting for a little grace.

You may not be the dog who runs up saying hello,
You’d rather take things nice and slow.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Ashley Signorino to Chesapeake Humane Society! 🐾

Dr. Signorino joined CHS as our new Medical Director, bringing more than 15 years of veterinary experience to our team, including eight years in private practice and the last seven years working in nonprofit medicine.

A Virginia native, Dr. Signorino grew up in Virginia Beach before earning her bachelor's degree from James Madison University and her DVM from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. Her professional interests include high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter, soft tissue surgery, and dentistry.

We're thrilled to have her experience, expertise, and passion for accessible veterinary care here at CHS, and even happier to welcome another Hampton Roads native back home.

We challenged you to collect 100 bags of pet food in 30 days. You more than doubled that goal, closing out August with an incredible 212 bags of pet food donated!

And that doesn't even include all of the canned food, treats, and other supplies you donated along the way.

Thank you to everyone who dropped off a bag, shared a post, organized a collection, shipped food to us, or encouraged someone else to get involved. You helped us completely restock our Community Pet Pantry and, thanks to you, we expect this food to carry us through until our next big restock during our Holiday Angel Tree donation drive in December.

Thank you for helping us keep food in bowls and pets with the families who love them. We couldn't do this without you. 🐶🐱

Our veterinary clinic is looking for a Licensed Veterinary Technician to join the CHS medical team.

Chesapeake Humane Society operates a low-cost, high-volume clinic providing affordable veterinary care to pets in our community, alongside care for shelter and foster animals. This is an opportunity to put your veterinary skills to work in a setting where no two days are quite the same, from surgery and anesthesia to wellness care, diagnostics, and patient support.

We're looking for someone who is compassionate, dependable, team-oriented, and ready to be part of a busy veterinary team.

Full-time and part-time opportunities are available.

We’re excited to share that Chesapeake Humane Society has been selected as a recipient of a Staying Home Grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization!

This funding will help us provide support services that keep senior dogs safe, healthy, and with their families, helping prevent unnecessary surrender and keeping more dogs where they belong: at home.

Through our Crisis Boarding Program, Pet Pantry, veterinary services, and other stabilization support, we can step in when a family is facing a difficult moment and help remove the barriers that could otherwise put their dog at risk.

The Staying Home Grant is part of Grey Muzzle’s national effort to better understand the challenges senior dog owners face and identify effective solutions that help families stay together.

A huge thank you to Grey Muzzle and its supporters for investing in this important work and for believing in a future where every senior dog has safety, love, and a soft landing. 🐾

We have plenty of reasons to celebrate National Dog Day today. So far this year, more than 300 dogs have found their forever homes through CHS. But adoption is just one part of what we do to support dogs in our community.

This year, we have also:
🐶 Distributed more than 5,000 pounds of dog food to local families through our Community Pet Pantry
🐶 Performed more than 820 dog spay/neuter surgeries through our low-cost veterinary clinic
🐶 Provided a safe place for 20 dogs through our Crisis Boarding Program
🐶 Had volunteers contribute nearly 1,000 hours walking, playing with, and caring for the dogs in our shelter

And of course, there are still several wonderful dogs waiting for their turn.

So whether you're celebrating your own best friend today, thinking about adding a dog to your family, volunteering your time, or helping us support dogs and their people, there's plenty of ways to make today count.

YOU DID IT!

We challenged you to collect 100 bags of pet food in 30 days.
YOU GAVE US 103 BAGS IN JUST 14 DAYS.

Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared, shipped food to us, and helped spread the word. We are incredibly grateful.

But we're keeping the momentum going because the need is not slowing down. We are receiving calls every day from pet owners who need help, and with our local shelters FULL, keeping pets in the homes they already know and love is more important than ever.

In just the first six months of this year, our Community Pet Pantry distributed 5,320 pounds of dry food and 3,448 cans of wet food, supporting an average of 67 pets every week.

So keep those donations coming! Every bag helps us say "yes" when a family reaches out for help.

One week down... and what an incredible start!

As we wrap up the first week of our 100 Bags in 30 Dayspet food drive, we're excited to share that we've already collected 47 bags of pet food for our Community Pet Pantry!

A huge thank you to the students in the Explorers Classroom at Primrose School at Edinburgh Commons, who stopped by this week to deliver the incredible results of their month-long donation drive. Together, these young animal advocates collected more than 1,000 pet food and pet care items to support Chesapeake Humane Society. We are so grateful for their kindness, generosity, and enthusiasm for helping pets in our community.

We also want to thank everyone who has dropped off donations at our shelter and clinic, as well as those who have shipped food directly to us from across Hampton Roads and beyond. Every bag donated helps ensure that families facing difficult times can keep their beloved pets at home.

We're almost halfway to our goal with three weeks still to go!
