"That's so Fetch!"

It's National Fetch Day! What a better way to celebrate than by playing fetch with your pet?! Not only do dogs enjoy fetching toys, but some cats have been known to enjoy getting in on the game!

🥎 There are many benefits to playing fetch. It stimulates your pet's natural prey drive. When thrown, their favorite ball or toy acts as fleeing quarry; your pet will instinctively give chase, releasing dopamine, burning off excess energy, which will decrease negative behaviors such as destructive chewing or excessive barking, as well as aid in weight loss.

🌡️ Be mindful of over-exertion. Some dogs will become overstimulated and play until they drop from over heating. Warning signs include excessive panting, bright red gums, thick & sticky drool, and a wide, curling tongue. Take frequent breaks to cool down and avoid playing during the hottest time of the day.

🥏Teach your dog to "drop it" to avoid an endless game of "keep away" or accidental finger nip when trying to retrieve said toy. Using high-value treats during training is a great way to reinforce a successful release command.

🦵 Protect their joints! Avoid high jumps, sharp turns, and abrupt stops that may impact your pet's joints negatively, especially if they are overweight or elderly. A wrong landing or rapid twist could cause damage to their spine, knees, hips, or various other ligaments & tendons. Instead, opt for rolling the ball on the ground as a lower impact option.

It's World Mental Health Day!

What better way to help your mental health than by spending the day with your beloved pet?

😁 Interacting with your pets can decrease anxiety and stress hormones like cortisol while also increasing good hormones like serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin, which make you happy!

🥰 Having a pet decreases loneliness. Studies show pets help ease symptoms of depression, isolation, & social withdrawal.

😄Pets can be good for your physical health! Owning a dog encourages you to be more active through daily walks and play!

🙂 Pet ownership encourages structure and purpose. Scheduling a daily routine of caring for your pet by feeding, walking, & playing can help battle depression and anxiety.

☺️ Pet ownership can be a social experience! Simply walking your dog or even visiting pet-friendly places is a great way to meet new people and make a connection!

Pet ownership can be very rewarding in many ways, not just for you, but also for your pet. They enjoy spending time with us more than we realize. Our pets are just a chapter in our lives, but to them we are their entire book.

It's World Rabies Day!

👤 Rabies is a fatal, yet preventable, viral disease that affects the central nervous system in mammals....and yes, humans are mammals.

🦇 In Northern America rabies is carried by wildlife, most commonly bats, skunks, raccoons, and foxes. It is spread through the saliva of an infected animal, usually by bites, scratches or through contact with broken skin or mucous membranes.

💉Rabies vaccination are REQUIRED by LAW in the United States and are given every 1-3 years depending on the type of vaccine and your pet's booster schedule.

🧠There is no way to test for rabies on a live animal. The only way to test for rabies is to examine the brain tissue of a deceased animal.

If you suspect an animal may be exposed to rabies contact your local animal control, DO NOT try to capture or contain any wildlife yourself! If you or your pet have recently tussled with a wild animal seek medical attention immediately!
