Few topics get Labrador people talking quite like the silver coat. 🩶

Silver Labradors have a distinctive smoky gray coat that is technically a diluted version of chocolate, caused by a separate dilution gene rather than being a naturally occurring color within the three breed standard colors of black, yellow, and chocolate. Major kennel clubs including the AKC do not recognize silver as an official Labrador color, and some breed purists argue the dilution gene may have entered the gene pool through crossbreeding generations ago, which is part of why the color remains controversial in certain circles.

None of that debate changes what these dogs are underneath the coat, a Labrador is still a Labrador in temperament, structure, and heart regardless of coat color. The disagreement is really about breed standards and genetic history, not about the individual dogs themselves.

Where do you land on the silver Labrador debate, striking rare variation or a color that strayed from the standard?
