To our WAK-9 family,

I wanted to share an important update with our community.

Yesterday, I met with Jefferson County Planning regarding a zoning complaint that was filed against our property. As a result, we have been given 45 days, effective August 3, to relocate our daycare and boarding operations to a property that complies with current county zoning requirements. (We have been searching anyway for breeding of service dogs)

This situation is not the result of licensing issues, animal welfare concerns, or violations of our operating standards. We maintain strict cleaning protocols, detailed Standard Operating Procedures, and extensive documentation regarding the care and management of every dog entrusted to us. The issue is simply that the zoning designation for our current property does not permit a business with client traffic operating from the home. (There are 6 businesses down our road, and we are the only one enforced, complaint driven)

Five years ago, when we moved here, WAK-9 looked very different. Daycare and boarding were never part of the original plan. As our community grew and demand increased, so did the services we offered. We have always tried to be good neighbors, transparent about our operation, and committed to serving Jefferson County families and their dogs.

The reality is that we now need to find a new home for WAK-9.

While this news came unexpectedly, I believe challenges often become opportunities. The truth is, we had already been discussing expansion. This may simply be the push we've needed to take the next step and build something even better for our clients, staff, and dogs.

What we need right now is community support.

If you know of commercial property, acreage, a warehouse, a shop, or any location within Jefferson County that could legally accommodate dog training, daycare, boarding, and future growth, please reach out. Our goal is to remain here and continue serving the community that has supported us from the beginning. (We are awaiting and approval list from planning to make sure we are in zoning compliance)

We know we could relocate to Redmond or elsewhere and likely continue to grow, but that isn't what we want. Our heart is here. Our clients are here. The dogs we serve are here.

Thank you to everyone who has trusted us with your dogs over the years. We aren't going anywhere. We simply have a new challenge in front of us, and we're determined to meet it.

☀️ Summer is Here — Plan Ahead for Your Dog’s Vacation Too! 🐾

Vacation season is in full swing, and one of the biggest mistakes we see every year is waiting until 24–48 hours before a trip to find boarding for your dog.

Just like you book your hotel, flights, and travel plans in advance, your dog’s accommodations should be part of that planning process. Many boarding facilities fill up weeks—or even months—ahead of time during the summer.

Before your trip, make sure:

✅ Boarding reservations are made early
✅ Vaccinations are current and meet state requirements
✅ Wellness exams are up to date
✅ Any medications, food, or special instructions are ready to go
✅ Required deposits are paid to secure your spot

Yes, many facilities require deposits. While it may seem inconvenient, that deposit ensures your dog’s reservation is held and helps facilities plan staffing and kennel availability. In many cases, deposits are refundable within the facility’s cancellation policy.

Don’t leave your dog’s vacation up to chance. Nothing puts a damper on travel plans faster than discovering your preferred boarding facility is already full.

Being a responsible dog owner means planning for your dog’s care just as carefully as you plan your own trip. A little preparation now helps ensure everyone has a safe, stress-free, and enjoyable vacation.

Here is another challenge for a Service Dog when working in close proximity to the public:

🍔 Food.

That paper bag sitting next to us? It contains a hamburger for the child seated nearby.

One of the most overlooked pieces of service dog training is teaching neutrality around competing motivators. A service dog doesn't just need to ignore distractions—they need to remain engaged with their handler when something they really want is within reach.

If you've ever seen Buddy's food drive, you know it is one of his strongest motivators. Food can easily outweigh toys, praise, and just about anything else in his world. Yet here he is, calmly lying at my feet, making the correct choice. On top of that. He has had less than 1/4 cup of food today in travel to keep his stomach from emptying where we don’t want it.

Training isn't about removing a dog's desires. It's about teaching them how to work through those desires and make good decisions despite them.

This is why regular proofing matters. Restaurants, airports, waiting rooms, sporting events, schools, and public transportation all present opportunities for dogs to encounter food they cannot have. A service dog must learn that their job remains the same regardless of what is happening around them.

Buddy continues to show me why he is such a special dog. ❤️🐾

It’s that time of year again!! Summer is in full swing, and that means clients (and their dogs) are on vacation. Don’t want to the last minute to get your dog vaccinated and plan their vacation.

Our required vaccines:
-DHLPP
-Bordetella
-Rabies

Any overdue vaccines will not be accepted, and clients will be turned away at the door.

Plan ahead, and book your reservation today!

🚨 An Alert from Buddy 🚨

Why?

Because I was sweating. 🥵

Before anyone asks, it isn't the sweat itself that Buddy alerts to. He knows the difference between me sweating from a workout and me sweating from stress. It's about what's in the sweat and the changes happening in my body.

Getting through TSA today was exhausting... not for him, but for me.

We had to completely dress Buddy down to get through security. First the collar came off. Then the harness. Meanwhile, my shorts decided this was the perfect time for a button to break. 🩳😅

So there I was, trying to hold up my britches while making multiple trips through security. Three times through, actually. Collar. Harness. Then finally us.

Buddy was standing there completely naked and couldn't have cared less. I, on the other hand, was about one loose waistband away from joining him.

Once we got everything put back together and found a place to stop, Buddy did what he does best—he alerted.

He recognized the spike in cortisol from the stress of navigating TSA and all the chaos that came with it. He knows my scent profile, and he knows what changes in my body chemistry mean.

Moments like this remind me just how special this dog is.

In a busy airport, surrounded by distractions, noise, crowds, and travel stress, Buddy still did his job flawlessly.
