And how all of those pieces work together.
Because I donโ€™t believe you can develop a truly competitive horse by looking at just one piece of the puzzle.
A horse needs a solid foundation before I can expect them to handle more speed.
They need to be physically prepared for the demands of their job.
They need to understand how to handle pressure, new environments, and the expectations of competition.
They need nutrition that supports the work theyโ€™re doing.
And their training needs to be appropriate for the horse in front of me, rather than following a timeline just because thatโ€™s what we usually do.

That means Iโ€™m constantly asking questions.

My goal isnโ€™t simply to get a horse around the pattern as fast as I can.
I want to develop horses that are confident, capable, adjustable, and physically prepared for the job weโ€™re asking them to do.
Whether that horse is headed for a futurity, a derby, or the competition pen with their owner, I want the training we do today to benefit that horse for the rest of its life.
Thatโ€™s the standard I hold my training program to.

What does ""Foundation First"" mean?

To me, it means making sure a horse understands not just the basics like walk/trot/lope, left and right, before I start asking for more.

They need to understand how to respond to pressure, control their body, listen to their rider and understand what Iโ€™m asking of them.

I also want to know how that horse handles pressure, new situations, mistakes and increased expectations.

As training progresses, Iโ€™m constantly asking myself: Are they ready for more? Are they telling me they need something else first? Do they need to see the vet? Do we need to get creative with their care? Each horse is an individual.
Thatโ€™s how I decide when we can move forward and when we need to wait.

This is especially important with futurity and derby horses, because Iโ€™m not just preparing them for one season. Iโ€™m educating them in a way that I want to stay with them throughout their lives.

And that applies to every barrel horse I work withโ€”not just young ones.

Foundation First means giving a horse the education they need to keep moving forward.

Having people who push you, challenge you, and believe in what youโ€™re capable of is a privilege. ๐Ÿค

In the horse world, growth doesnโ€™t always come easy. It takes early mornings, uncomfortable lessons, setbacks, and the willingness to show up even when things arenโ€™t going as planned.

But the pressure to become better? Thatโ€™s an opportunity. The people who hold you accountable? Thatโ€™s a gift. And the horse standing in front of you, trusting you to lead them through it all? Thatโ€™s a responsibility worth showing up for.

we believe the best partnerships are built through intentional training, continued education, and a community that wants to see you succeed.

The riders who make the most progress usually understand that there are three pieces to becoming a better barrel racer: mental, physical and horsemanship.

Iโ€™ve always known all three were important, but teaching a retreat this summer really drove home for me just how connected they are.

You can have a great horse and know how to ride a pattern, but if your mind isnโ€™t in the right place, that can show up in your riding.

You can have a strong mental game, but if your body isnโ€™t strong, balanced or able to do what youโ€™re asking it to do, that matters too.

And none of that replaces good horsemanship. You have to understand your horse, communicate effectively and have the skills to actually put all of those pieces together.

The riders I see making the biggest changes are the ones who donโ€™t just wait for their lesson to work on these things.

They do the work between lessons.

We talk about the mental game. We talk about physical fitness. We talk about horsemanship. And I encourage my riders to seek out good professionals in the areas where they need more help.

I even have mental game and physical fitness coaches I like to refer my riders to when I know they need support in those areas.

Because I donโ€™t believe I need to be the only person helping you become a better barrel racer.

My job is to help you put the pieces togetherโ€”and sometimes that means helping you find the right people to help with the pieces I donโ€™t specialize in.

The goal isnโ€™t just to have a better run.

Itโ€™s to become a better, more capable horseman and riderโ€”and that takes work both inside and outside of the arena.

One of the biggest differences I see between barrel racers who want to do it alone and those who choose to work with a coach:

Itโ€™s not that one group works harder.

Itโ€™s that a coach can help you see what you canโ€™t see from the saddle.

When youโ€™re doing it all on your own, itโ€™s easy to spend months working on the wrong thing. You think your horse is having a problem at the barrel, when the real issue started 20 feet before it. You change equipment, change your approach, change your timingโ€”and sometimes youโ€™re just changing things without really knowing what the problem is.

When you have a coach who knows you and your horse, you have another set of eyes to help you identify what is actually happening and why.

I also see riders with coaches make progress because they have someone to hold them accountable to the process.

Sometimes you need to go back and fix a hole in the foundation. Sometimes your horse is telling you something. Sometimes you are the piece that needs to change.

And sometimes you just need someone standing on the rail saying, โ€œYep. I saw it too. Hereโ€™s what weโ€™re going to do about it.โ€

You can absolutely learn a lot on your own.

But you donโ€™t have to spend years trying to figure out every piece by yourself.

The right coach doesnโ€™t do the work for you. They help you understand the work youโ€™re doing so you can become a better horseman and a better rider.

Thatโ€™s what I want for every rider I coach.

Thereโ€™s a lot of confusion around the difference between futurities and derbies, so we will break it down.

A horse can generally be eligible to futurity as a 4- or 5-year-old.

If we futurity a horse as a 4-year-old, they can then move into their derby years as a 5-year-old and continue through their 8-year-old year.

My preference is often to wait until 5 to futurity.

That extra year can give us more time to develop the horse physically, mentally and foundationally before asking them to compete at that level. They are almost always just stronger in every aspect and more mature which in my mind, makes them more competitive.

But,

A horse does NOT have to futurity to be a derby horse.

I have had 5-year-olds come to me that missed their futurity year for all kinds of reasons.

Some were pushed a little too hard, too early and need to go back and have their foundation rebuilt. Others may have been held back because of an injury, surgery or another circumstance that kept them from being ready to compete.

Missing their futurity year doesnโ€™t automatically mean a horse isnโ€™t capable of having a competitive career.

Sometimes the right thing to do is take the time the horse needs, make sure theyโ€™re physically ready, rebuild any holes in their foundation and then bring them along for their derby year as a 6-year-old.

So why would an owner choose to put their horse into a futurity or derby program?

Sometimes they simply want their horse finished and developed by a professional before taking the reins themselves.

And sometimes that horse is a potential breeding prospect. For a mare or stallion that will eventually become part of a breeding program, lifetime earnings, titles and accomplishments can add significant value to that horseโ€™s future.

There isnโ€™t one right path for every horse.

The important thing is understanding where that horse is in its development, what its body and mind are ready for, and what the ownerโ€™s long-term goals are.

My job isnโ€™t just to get a horse ready for the next event they are eligible for.

Itโ€™s to develop the horse in front of me and make decisions that give that horse the best opportunity for a long competitive career.
