Welcoming the next generation of Proper Pups! Dean has a new sister, Darcy, and Milo has a new brother named Max. Both siblings are starting training with a leg up (pun intended) as their big bros are prime examples of good dogs. I’m grateful for the assistance in instruction. ❤️🐶

Another great privilege of my work is getting to watch families grow. I worked with little Otis as a pup and now I get to work with his new “big” sis Millie! This family is always so much fun. Lots of laughs and love. 💕 And mom Delaina Collins *almost* always has the visible spirit of Christmas around. 🎄 A benefit of working with generations of dogs is getting to teach new skills while the older doggo is my helpful assistant. Dogs do teach the next generation in a way I never could! Looking forward to watching this family’s continued growth in love!

Welcome Brisket (the cutie patootie floofy) to Week 1 of AKC STAR Puppy training! This kid is already heeling like an old pro and big sister Macaroni (Mac to her friends) is also showing out and getting treats too. ⭐️ So, what happens if Brisket gets all of his skills before the 6 week course is up? We build of course! This is one of the benefits of private one-on-one sessions… not only do we do real-world socializing with other pups and peeps, I also will teach as much as your pup wants to learn. No doubt Mr. Brisket will be keeping me on my teaching toes!

I recently went to do temperament testing on a litter of 7 week old poodle puppies whelped by my friends at Good Friend Poodles and let me tell you… this is what true quality breeding looks like! Before the pups were even conceived, I had worked with and observed both parents. Both have beautiful conformation and lovely demeanor. The dam in fact came from a line that have actively worked as therapy and service dogs. So you might be curious… what is temperament testing and what can it tell us about pups?

Temperament testing on puppies can give potential owners a framework as to what type of job a particular dog might be best suited to do. This is done by observing how a pup deals with strangers, understanding eye contact, looking at their drive to “scent”, and by watching their natural “problem solving” instincts.

In this litter, all the pups showed promising potential for service or therapy dog work and one might even be an outstanding hunting companion! ❤️ And every single one could just as easily become someone’s forever companion. Whether your home is active or chill, there’s pup in this litter to suit your needs.

Sweet little Rosie! 🌹 She was recently adopted by her mom Alivia and is settling in nicely. But Rosie has started a new behavior since landing in her new forever home… barking at strangers. This is not uncommon with rescues dogs as it takes a month or two for many to decompress and start acting more independently in their new environment. I went to give Rosie’s humans some tools to use when this behavior pops up. Now in the tool kit we have the resources of relaxation and reward and Rosie very quickly forgot about the barking business. 😁 Does this mean that she will never bark at strangers again? Nope. But with consistency and time she is learning that giving mom the look of love instead of overzealously greeting the neighbor pays better than the former. ❤️ Do you have a pup that needs help taking off their nosey-pants? 😁🥰🐶 I can help with that! What a sweet pair Willow and her mom Kelsey make! 🥰 The happiness is boundless in their home… so much so that Miss Willow wants to clobber you with her affections. 😁 I came to work with Willow because she’s an energetic jumper. Can y’all relate? One reason dogs jump on you to greet you? It’s been systemically (unknowingly) rewarded since they were little-bitty.Lots of lovins and pets when they put there precious puppy paws on you which… aren’t as cute when they are older. How can we undo that unwanted behavior? By asking for quiet and “all four on the floor” then rewarding the heck out of it! Consistency is key! And Miss Willow caught on super fast. I recently went to work with these two cuties, Peter and Dozey, on nipping and jumping. Can you guess which one is the jumper? The clue is in the name… 😁🥰 Both quickly took to the lesson and were behaving like the perfect gentleman and lady in no time. Jumping is very common because we humans often encourage it… unknowingly. And nipping is often a case of meeting an anxious doggo too quickly… with too much eye contact and a lot of excitement. Learning your dog’s boundaries and body language while teaching your own boundaries goes a long way towards having a well-mannered pup.
