Pack of Paws Dog Training is recommended by local veterinarians, animal control officers, trainers and other animal professionals for puppy classes, obedience classes and for problem solving. We are dedicated to helping owners understand the benefits of training by keeping our training programs simple, applicable and totally doable for any pet owner no matter the challenges that are presented. Joyce, Halli, Kismet & Mayhem took their training on the road! 🐾🚗

They spent two weeks traveling across the country, exploring national parks, visiting restaurants and breweries, seeing wildlife, and meeting hundreds of people along the way.

With four-month-old Mayhem along for the adventure, all those everyday training skills really mattered. Their strong foundation helped make two weeks of new places, new experiences, and lots of distractions easy and low-stress for both the dogs and humans.

And once they got home, Mayhem was ready for a different kind of adventure! She attended two puppy agility foundation seminars with Peyton Green and Annette Alfonso, working on the early skills that will help build confidence, communication, and teamwork as she grows.

Training isn’t just about what happens in class or at a competition. It’s about being able to enjoy more of life together—and this crew is certainly doing that!

September was a BIG month for Donna, Lazer & Buzzy! 🏆

Lazer had an incredible month, earning three Double Qs, three Premier Standard Qs, numerous placements, her Master FAST title, and MACH2—making her an AKC Master Agility Champion for the second time!

Buzzy had plenty to celebrate, too, earning one Master Jumpers Q and three Master FAST Qs, all with placements.

Behind every ribbon and title are countless hours of training, practice, and time spent together. As Donna says, time spent training is time spent with our dogs—and these three certainly make the most of it. ❤️

💡Quick Tip: Practice impulse control during everyday life.

Does your dog rush through doors, dive for the food bowl, or struggle to wait when something exciting is happening?

Those everyday moments are great opportunities to practice impulse control. Ask your dog to pause, wait, or check in with you before being released to something they want -- like dinner, going outside, greeting someone, or getting a favorite toy.

The goal isn’t to take away the fun or excitement. It’s to help your dog learn that staying calm and connected is what gets them access to the things they want.

Start with easy situations and short waits, then gradually make it more challenging as your dog gets better at the skill.

A little practice throughout the day can add up to a dog who finds it much easier to think before they act.

Fall walks bring plenty of distractions: squirrels, crunchy leaves, kids playing outside, other dogs, and all kinds of interesting smells. Instead of waiting until your dog is already distracted to ask for their attention, reward the check-in before you need it.

Try this on your next walk:

1️⃣ Watch for Voluntary Check-Ins
Any time your dog looks back at you on their own, mark it with “Yes!” and reward them.

2️⃣ Don't Always Ask for Something
Sometimes reward the check-in and simply keep walking. Your dog learns that paying attention to you doesn't always mean the fun stops.

3️⃣ Practice Before Things Get Hard
Start on a quiet stretch of your walk. Once your dog is regularly checking in, practice where there are slightly more distractions.

4️⃣ Reward the Tough Ones
Did your dog look at you instead of staring at a squirrel or pulling toward another dog? Make that check-in especially worthwhile!

One of the best things about dog sports is the community that comes with them!

Several members of our Rally Obedience class recently competed at the Wachusett Kennel Club, putting the skills they've been practicing in class to work in the ring.

For some of these teams, competing is a new adventure - and they're doing it together! They attend trials as a group, support each other, celebrate the good runs, and keep learning along the way.

These teams train with Dianne Barrett at Pack of Paws, and we love seeing their class friendships extend beyond the training room.

Dog sports aren't just about ribbons and titles. They're a chance to have fun with your dog, challenge yourselves, and find a community of people who enjoy doing the same thing.

Congratulations to our newest Puppy Kindergarten graduates! 🐾🎓

These little ones worked hard on the basics: name recognition, sit, loose-leash walking, handling, and getting comfortable in new places. Most of all, they learned that training is FUN!

Joyce, Kismet, and Mayhem spent August 22 in Vermont at an agility seminar with Karen Holik.

For Kismet, the focus was on sharpening handling skills and giving Joyce new ideas she can bring back to her own training and her Agility students at Pack of Paws.

For Mayhem, it was a big first: her very first agility seminar! Joyce and Mayhem worked on puppy foundation skills that will help set them up for success as they begin their agility journey together.

A great day of learning for both dogs, and a fun start to what’s ahead for Mayhem!
