šŸ’‰ Vaccine titers should be a standard part of veterinary care, in my opinion.

🩸 A simple blood test can tell you if your pet is protected and prevent the overuse of vaccines.

āœ–ļøWe know that protection from core vaccines can last much longer than what’s stated on the reminder card from the vet, yet ā€œannual shotsā€ is the norm.

āœ… If your vet doesn’t offer vaccine titers, or they quote exorbitant fees, here are some affordable locations for titer testing.

For a full rundown of what titers are, why I recommend considering titer testing, what the results mean, and so much more, read my latest blog post "Titer Testing for Dogs and Cats" on DrJudyMorgan.com

🦷🐶 NEW STUDY: DOGS GIVEN A PROBIOTIC HAD 50% LESS PLAQUE, 75% LESS TARTAR & 86% LESS GUM BLEEDING AFTER 8 WEEKS.

Most people think about probiotics for their dog’s gut. But your dog has another important microbiome too: the one living in their mouth.

Plaque is actually a sticky bacterial biofilm, and researchers are now looking at whether beneficial bacteria can help support a healthier oral microbiome.

And this is why this new research is so exciting. šŸ‘‡

Dr. Karen Becker ’s Primitive Probioticsā„¢ contains probiotic species that are being investigated for oral health, including L. reuteri and P. acidilactici.

In fact, another recent dog study tested L. plantarum + P. acidilactici and found significantly less dental plaque, along with beneficial changes in oral bacteria and inflammatory markers, after just 21 days.

In the new 8 week study, all dogs first received a professional dental cleaning. Half were then given probiotic powder in their food or water twice daily.

No tooth brushing, dental chews, toothpaste or other oral hygiene products were allowed.

By 8 weeks, the probiotic dogs had approximately:

🦷 50% less plaque
🦷 75% less tartar
🩸 86% less gum bleeding

The study was a 2026 randomized controlled pilot study published in the peer reviewed journal Life.

What makes this especially exciting is that we usually think of probiotics for the gut, but emerging research suggests beneficial bacteria may have an important role in the mouth too.

We have emphasized this for years. Especially when the big scare and scam was put out by Science Diet years ago.

🚨 A HUGE NEW STUDY IS CHALLENGING WHAT PET PARENTS HAVE BEEN TOLD ABOUT GRAIN-FREE DOG FOOD.

A 2026 Veterinary Medicine and Science study analyzed Dog Aging Project data from 47,000+ dogs and found grain-free diets were NOT associated with increased odds of developing new heart problems.

🤯 More than HALF of owners who reported feeding grain-free were WRONG when researchers checked the ingredients. Foods that sounded grain-free actually contained rice, corn, wheat, barley or oats.

Researchers also followed 7,113 dogs for two years. Dogs that switched to grain-free had FEWER newly reported heart diagnoses than dogs that never ate grain-free, while dogs consistently eating grain-free showed no significant difference.

Both grain-free AND grain-containing foods can contribute to nutritional DCM. So can poorly formulated raw and homemade diets.

Peas, lentils and potatoes aren’t inherently ā€œbad,ā€ and adding grains does NOT magically make food cardioprotective—there’s ZERO taurine in grains!

The bigger question is whether the finished food provides enough bioavailable protein and essential amino acids for the dog eating it.

And here’s the overlooked problem: AAFCO ā€œall life stagesā€ foods meet nutrient requirements for growth and reproduction, but adult dogs often need far fewer calories than growing puppies.

So owners feed less to prevent obesity. But when you cut food, you don’t just cut calories—you cut protein, amino acids, vitamins and minerals too.

A food can meet AAFCO requirements on paper, yet a lower-calorie dog eating less receives less of EVERY nutrient, not to mention some dogs genetically don’t make enough taurine for heart health.

šŸ• The question isn’t ā€œgrain-free or grain-inclusive?ā€

It’s: Is THIS dog getting enough protein, essential amino acids and other critical nutrients for the calories they actually consume? That’s the nutritional DCM conversation we should be having.

Calories change. Nutrient needs don’t.

Perfection isn't the goal — balance is. āš–ļø

Dr. Ian Billinghurst reminds us that dogs, like us, don't need every single meal to hit perfect nutritional targets. Balance is built over time, through variety — real, raw, natural foods that mirror what dogs are biologically designed to eat.

Stop stressing over "perfect" and start feeding for balance over time. šŸ•

WE GET IT! Stop in to see how we can help your pets get back to being healthy simply by eating biologically appropriate foods.

The gap between the two is wider than most pet parents realize — and it didn't happen overnight. Decades of processed, convenience-driven pet food have pulled dogs and cats further and further from the diet they were biologically designed to thrive on.

Dr. Ian Billinghurst has spent his career studying exactly what that ancestral diet looks like — and how to bring it back into modern homes safely and practically.
