Our newest rescue kitty is showing exactly how we feel about scammers! We wanted to take a moment to remind all of our community members and nonprofit neighbors to be vigilant and NEVER share personal information with anyone.
Recently we received an email asking about making a donation to our organization. As a small non-profit that is primarily self-funded, this is always exciting! Sadly, it didn't take long to feel "off" and realize that it was a scam. In this particular case, they had great communication and did mail us a check. This is where the scam sets it ... you get a check for too much money and they want you to send them a large portion of it back (said they were donating $2,000 and sent a check for $6,000). Thankfully, we knew it was a scam and did not fall for this but we know that there are people out there that have excitedly deposited this donation check only to have their world turned upside down.
It makes us so angry that people work so hard to take advantage of others and of organizations that are trying to do good work in this world. We have taken the appropriate steps to report this and have been in contact with other rescues that are dealing with the same scam.
We just wanted to remind everyone to stay smart and stay safe. Take care of each other and do good where you can!
