I admit, I've been pretty negligent in my social media duties the past few months. And I apologize for that. Beginning last summer, my weekends from June to October began filling up with dock diving events for our new, crazy, rescue Malinois, Bali. So, my time in the store became more limited and while in store, I was busy making up for time lost on the weekends. And then we added a second Malinois sport dog this year. And basically we are insane. ๐
Also, we recently lost our 4.5 year old South African Boerboel, Rooster, to T-cell Lymphoma. We did not do traditional chemotherapy for a multitude of reasons. But with prednisone and holistic modalities, we were able to get 11 weeks post diagnosis. Losing such a large presence in our home has been difficult, l admit. It makes one wonder, if you're doing all the healthy things, feeding a fresh diet, reducing chemicals as much as possible, and trying so hard to make your pet live as long as possible, how we could have lost him at 4.5?
Here's what I will say....without our approach, would he have even lived to 4.5? Maybe he would have been diagnosed at 3.5. And despite what you can do environmentally, you cannot fight genetics. Rooster was a rescue so we know nothing about his past, his parents, or lineage. But we tried so hard to support him naturally. The way dogs should be supported. He ate a fresh diet. He was not over vaccinated but got the basics to assure he, and other dogs, was safe from contracting or spreading disease. He received limited to no contact with chemicals like yard sprays or scented air fresheners like Air Wick. He did not get oral flea & tick chemicals. His exposure to heartworm preventative was minimal. We did everything we were supposed to do. But genetics matter and are hard to fight.
On the day that we said goodbye, I was looking for something to keep my mind busy. I didn't want anything strenuous. I didn't want anything that required a whole ton of thought. And then I remembered that I had made some frozen molds of goat milk and turmeric. So, that night, after saying farewell to my best big mastiff, I opted to make a fancy bowl - complete with raw food, goat milk, veggies, etc. Because I still firmly believe in offering a non processed, no synthetic, fresh diet. Mako was the lucky recipient of that fancy bowl. I don't get to do it often due to my commute and limited free time but I have enjoy doing the fancy bowls when I have time.
At any rate, the dock season has nearly come to a close and I will be able to focus more on some seasonal events that I'm SOOOO excited about. Keep an eye out for our upcoming Barksgiving Feast fundraiser, Secret Santa Paws, and Grinchmas events! Please note, we will NOT be offering photos with Santa this year but we hope you will keep an eye out for Green Dogs Unleashed holiday events for pics with Santa that support the rescue directly. โค๏ธ
