❄️ Cold Weather + Dogs | A Quick Winter Check-In
🐾As temps drop, it’s worth remembering that cold weather hits our smaller breeds a little harder. Tiny bodies lose heat faster, and what feels “brisk” to us can feel downright uncomfortable to them.
A few simple ways to keep your pup protected this winter:
🧥 Bundle the Littles Small breeds, seniors, and short-haired dogs benefit from sweaters or coats. If they’re shivering, lifting paws, or trying to rush back inside, that’s their way of saying “I’m cold.”
🐾 Mind the Paws Cold ground, ice, and salt can irritate paw pads. Quick wipes after walks help, and dog booties are great if your pup will tolerate them.
⏱️ Shorter Walks Are Okay You don’t need marathon walks in freezing temps. Multiple shorter outings are often better than one long one.
🏠 When Outside Time Is Limited, Go Inside Mental stimulation goes a long way when walks are shorter or skipped altogether.
Some easy indoor enrichment ideas:
💙Frozen lick mats or stuffed Kongs (licking is calming)
💙Scatter feeding or “find it” games with kibble
💙Simple scent games using towels or boxes
💙Short training sessions focused on calm behaviors
💙Teaching a “place” or mat settle while you move around the house.
A tired brain is just as powerful as tired legs.
💡Small reminder Cold weather does not mean lazy dogs. It just means we get a little more creative.
Stay warm, stay intentional, and listen to what your dog is telling you. They always communicate. We just have to pay attention.
