It is baby copperhead season! Please keep an extra eye open when taking your pets out. While these snakes really want nothing to do with you, our furry friends may be a little too curious and get themselves into a potentially dangerous situation.

Carmel Road has a licensed wildlife rehabber and venomous snake relocator on staff. In the event you find any snakes in your yard or home, please contact 704-900-6039 and ask for Caroline. You can also reach her directly by texting 304-661-3767. Please provide a photo of the snake.

✨Myth Buster✨
It is a myth that baby copperhead venom is worse than that of an adult. The venom is exactly the same, however the venom glands in a baby are much smaller than an adult, meaning there is just less venom to be be injected in a bite. Baby copperheads have full control over their muscles and can control how much venom they use.

Found a wild animal? Here are the steps you should take:

Please be careful! Always approach and handle animals with caution. Never touch something with your bare hands- use gloves or a thick towel. Once you have the animal in your possession, keep it in a secure box or carrier in a quiet, warm, dark place. Please refrain from handling or continuously looking at the animal to keep stress low. Never let domestic pets interact with wild animals- no matter how small!

One of the most important things to remember is to NOT feed the animal. While your first instinct may tell you it is hungry or thirsty, improper feeding techniques and diet can cause aspiration pneumonia, bloat, diarrhea, and can ultimately be the reason the animal dies. Google is filled with misinformation and wild animals can go an extended period of time without food and water- especially if the end result will lead to proper nutrition and care.

Not all found wildlife needs help. Nocturnal animals will come out during the day to look for food, that is not an indication it has rabies or other illness! However, any wild animal, regardless of size, if it openly approaches you it is asking for help. If this happens or you see an animal with any visible injuries/wounds, limping, overly friendly behavior or repeated circling, please contact a licensed rehabber.

Carmel Road Animal has a licensed wildlife rehabber on staff. If you have found wildlife, please call 704-900-6039 and ask for Caroline to receive the next steps. She also offers native venomous snake relocation services to the Waxhaw, NC area.

www.ahnow.org is also a wonderful resource to have on hand as you can put your location in and it will show you licensed rehabbers in your area.

We thank you for caring about not only your pets, but for native wildlife as well! 🧡
