Have you ever come across a venomous snake?
Check out the excellent sandy brown camouflage pattern of the western diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) that the Critter Crew encountered as it crossed our path while night cruising some remote dirt roads in southern Arizona. These beautiful creatures are a venomous species of pit viper and should always be admired from a safe distance. This species ranges from Southern California, through Texas and into Arkansas, and south into the upper portion of Mexico.
After a few quick photos, we used our hooked tools to help move this amazing snake out of the road and it slithered off into the night, unharmed.

Check out the spectacular orange and black saddle pattern on the long-nosed snake (Rhinocheilus lecontei) that the Critter Crew recently encountered while exploring the desert near the Chiricahua mountains in southern Arizona!
Long-nosed snakes are a seldom seen colubrid that live a primarily fossorial lifestyle and spend most of their time hidden underground. They prey on lizards and frogs primarily, but have also been observed eating snakes and rodents on occasion. They range from northern Mexico through most of the southwestern United States.
After a few photographs, this beautiful nonvenomous colubrid was moved safely off the road and left, unharmed, to continue its nocturnal journey through the desert.

What’s the weirdest bug that you’ve ever seen?
Check out the size of the vinegaroon (Mastigoproctus giganteus) that the Critter Crew encountered the Chiricahua mountains in southern Arizona earlier this month! Also known as the giant whip scorpion, these unusual arachnids range through the southern United States and into Mexico. These nonvenomous prey on a wide variety of insects, arachnids, millipedes, and even small amphibians! When threatened they can spray an acid from the base of their tail that smells distinctly of vinegar. They are the only member of the Thelyphonidae family, and can live up to seven years. Females only reproduce once throughout their lives and exhibit a maternal instinct, guarding their 40+ offspring until they’re big enough to venture out on their own.

Have you ever encountered a tarantula in the wild?
Check out the size of the Arizona blonde tarantula (Aphonopelma chalcodes) that the Critter Crew recently encountered outside of the Chiricahua Desert Museum during thrv International H**petological Symposium earlier this month!
Native to Arizona and New Mexico these beautiful spiders are well adapted to life in the harsh desert climate. This species is also quite common in the pet trade, and its relatively docile demeanor makes it a great choice as a first tarantula for those new to the hobby. After a few quick photographs, this beautiful spider was released, unharmed, back into its desert home.
