Did you know that the Critter Crew’s nonprofit reptile rescue, Cold Blooded & Bizarre Outreach, offers free relocations of venomous snakes and other nuisance animals?
Check out this beautiful “Hershey kiss” pattern on the venomous copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix) that the Critter Crew helped a friend relocate deep into the back of their heavily wooded property after discovering the wayward viper hanging out on their front porch!
Copperheads are a species of pit viper, and although their venom is rarely fatal to humans, they posses an extremely painful bite. They are opportunistic carnivores, preying on a wide variety of small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and even invertebrates! It’s noteworthy to mention that, despite their fearsome reputation, at no point while interacting with this beautiful animal did she ever strike or display any sort of defensive behavior. During the entirety of our interactions she merely wanted to get away and be left alone.
Do not try this at home! We do not recommend interacting with copperheads or other venomous species without proper training. The vast majority of snakebites and envenomations can be avoided by giving the animal space and leaving it to continue on its way. Situations where intervention is required are always best handled by trained professionals.
