Fall changes what is waiting in your yard. 🍂

Fall fertilizer and pesticide applications are toxic if ingested, and pets pick them up off paws as easily as off grass. Sharp tools and yard debris cause cuts and punctures. Moldy leaves and compost piles can contain tremorgenic mycotoxins, which cause tremors and seizures in dogs who eat them.

Store products sealed and out of reach, put tools away, and clear wet leaf piles before they break down.

The habits that protect mobility later start early. Keeping your dog at a healthy weight takes real load off the joints. Consistent moderate exercise builds the muscle that supports them. Traction on slippery floors prevents the slips that add up. And catching a subtle limp early opens up more options than waiting until it is constant.

If your dog is slowing down on walks, hesitating at the stairs, or taking longer to get up, bring it up with us. There is usually more we can do than people expect.

Wildlife gets busier in the fall, and so do the odds your dog meets some of it.

Squirrels, skunks, and raccoons are all more active this time of year as they stock up before winter. Raccoons and skunks can carry rabies and leptospirosis, and even a brief scuffle can leave a bite wound that needs attention.

Keep pets leashed on walks, especially at dawn and dusk, and make sure vaccines are current.

Antifreeze is the one to know about. It tastes sweet, so pets drink it willingly, and even a small amount can cause kidney failure in cats. A puddle under a car or a spill left on the floor is enough. Pesticides, rodent bait, windshield washer fluid, and paint thinners each carry their own risks.

Store products on a high shelf or in a closed cabinet, clean spills right away, and check that containers are sealed.

Antifreeze poisoning moves fast and cats often show no obvious signs until damage is done. If you suspect exposure, do not wait.

There is a reason your cat ignores the water bowl.

Cats descended from desert animals and evolved to get most of their moisture from prey. That left them with a low thirst drive, which works fine in the wild and less well when dinner comes out of a bag. Chronic mild dehydration adds strain on the kidneys and urinary tract over time.

A few things that help: refresh water daily, add moisture-rich wet food, and try a pet water fountain, since many cats prefer moving water.

If your cat's drinking has changed noticeably in either direction, let us know. That one is worth a look.

That instinct comes from a good place, but even a brief interruption can pull a dog's attention away right when their handler needs it most. Space is the kindest gesture you can offer.

Save the greeting for off-duty hours. Plenty of these dogs are complete goofballs once the vest comes off. 🐾

Training is one of the greatest gifts you can give your dog. Not only does it build confidence and strengthen your bond, but it also helps keep them safe in everyday situations.

One of the most important skills is a dependable recall (“come”). Even if your dog usually listens, it’s safest to keep them leashed in unfenced or unfamiliar areas until they have a reliable recall, and remember, even well-trained dogs should stay leashed where local leash laws apply.
