🎆 Fireworks Safety for Pets 🐾

While fireworks are fun for us, they can be loud, frightening, and overwhelming for many pets. Preparing ahead of time can make a big difference in keeping them safe and calm during the holiday.

Here are a few important tips to keep in mind:
🏡 Leave pets at home. Fireworks displays can trigger anxiety and fear-based behaviors. Keep pets in a quiet, secure area indoors with blinds closed, white noise playing, and a favorite treat or toy for comfort.
🐕 Prevent panicked escapes. The 4th of July is one of the most common days for dogs to run away. Always take pets outside on a leash, even in a fenced yard, and make sure their ID tags and microchip information are up to date.
💊 Plan for medical support if needed. If your pet struggles with fireworks anxiety, talk to your veterinarian ahead of time about medications or calming supplements that can help them feel more comfortable.

If your pet needs extra support this holiday season, the team at Southeast Animal Behavior & Training is here to help with personalized behavior and medical management plans. 💙

April Pet of the Month: Meet Tanner! 🐶

Handsome? Obviously. 😍 But Tanner is so much more than just a good-looking 5-year-old Labrador Retriever mix. He’s sweet, goofy, and full of personality, the kind of boy who keeps you smiling every day. 🐾

Tanner hasn’t always been sure about unfamiliar people or dogs, and he’s had moments where he can feel a little grumpy, even with his family. But here’s the thing: progress isn’t always linear, and Tanner is proof that hard work truly pays off. 💙

Recently, his family shared that while they feel they’ve hit a bit of a plateau, Tanner’s behavior is now much more manageable, and that’s a huge win. His growling at home has improved significantly (now only popping up occasionally when he’s sleepy or guarding high-value items), and with thoughtful adjustments, like medication support, he was able to bounce back without further incidents. 👏

On walks, Tanner still brings that big Lab energy, but even there, we’re seeing progress. He’s learning, adapting, and showing more restraint, like a recent moment with a loose dog where he chose a warning growl instead of a full reaction. That’s growth. 🙌

Tanner, we are so incredibly proud of you. Your journey is a testament to patience, dedication, and the power of understanding our dogs for who they are. Keep going, handsome boy, you’re doing amazing things. 🐶✨

🐾 March Pet of the Month: Stevie! 🐾

Meet Stevie, the sweetest (and cutest!) 6-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier. Stevie came to see the team at Southeast Animal Behavior & Training for help with resource guarding and reactivity, and she has been working hard on her journey toward improvement.

With the dedication of her amazing mom, guidance from Dr. O'Brian, and lots of training support from Camille, Stevie has made wonderful progress. Consistency, patience, and teamwork have made all the difference!

Along the way, Stevie has also welcomed a brand-new human brother into her life with open paws, though we hear it helps that he shares plenty of snacks. 😉

We’re so proud of all the hard work Stevie and her family have put in. Go Stevie! 🐶👏
