Was taking the opportunity to clean out and organize the tack room after Sela's bath. She decided she wanted to hang out in the action. She's so sweet.

"I don't want Lessons"

Regardless of where you ride,
You need riding lessons to be
fair to the horse, but. . .

Somehow, there are people under the impression that you only need a riding instructor if you're competing in a show ring,
or that 30-90 days of training is all a trail horse needs to be ready for a beginner needs to enjoy leisurely rides.

You need to have a trainer working with you and your horse for as long as you're a novice and the horse is green. How long that is varies situation to situation. And that's just a basic start.

There is no such thing as "just" Trail riding or "just" a trail horse.

The trail presents more obstacles and unpredictable dangers than most anything else, honestly, when we talk about riding a horse.

It's an entirely uncontrollable, boundary free setting full of falling trees, branches, ticks, bees, snakes, untrained riders and horses, bears, wind, rain, hail, muck and mire.

A single accident on a horse can end your life in an instant. On the other side, a single bad handling episode from a ride can ruin a horse for his life.

Take horses and riding seriously.

Horses deserve we show up committed to knowledge for both their sakes and our own

These two lovely ladies brought their horses over for a gaiting lesson today. Both are new to gaited horses and both have TWH's. What's interesting is that while they are the same breed, they move very differently. Holly's horse Ellie is more of a traditional Walker, with a big rocking chair walk and nice running walk. Teresa's horse Gracie is more "racky" with a tighter walk and nice saddle gait.

Things to remember when learning to gait:

1. Make sure you set your horse up before asking asking for increased speed.

2. Find your horse's sweet spot (don't go too fast!)

3. When horse is in the sweet spot, release pressure on the reins, make small adjustments if you're horse falls out of gait.

4. Reward your horse! Don't ask for too much at a time, reward the try, even if it's just one length of the arena

5. Gradually work on increasing duration of gait and speed.

Thanks for hauling up here Holly and Teresa!

Here's a fun one: do you let your horse eat with bit in their mouth?

This is something I have always done and never thought twice about until I started coming across people who discourage their horses from eating with a bit. What's your stance?

Maestro says: "What do you mean you don't want me right on top of you?!"

We are learning personal space and boundaries on the ground.
