A few years ago, when Shawn was still Fire Chief, we were out for dinner one night and a call came in for a wreck. He responded. The wreck wasn’t horrible, the driver needed a few stitches but would be fine. With them though, were three very small dogs. When the accident happened (and it was that, it wasn’t anyone’s fault), the three dogs hit the windshield and passed away due to their injuries. I was traumatized. And since then have refused to drive around with our dogs loose in the car.

I’ve seen so many lost dogs that fled an accident out of fear too. Which is also traumatic and terrifying.

I’ve purchased car seats, and tethers, but honestly none felt safe. I’ve contemplated designing and fabricating my own with actual safety in mind and not just a quick, half solution. But…..until that happens, these have been the best things I’ve found. I do recommend attaching them to a harness vs a collar, for comfort and safety. I have a few at the barn as well, if anyone wants one quickly. These snap easily into the seat belt or can be anchored to the car seat anchors as well. *These are not crash test rated. I realize they are not the top choice for safety. However, these are an affordable and safer alternative, rather than having nothing.

Also, edit to add, having your pets secured also makes it safer for first responders when responding to an accident. Dogs can become protective and reactive in certain situations…..this being one of them.

School is officially starting this week!! The summer has flown by.

Each month, we put all of our guests staying that month in a drawing and draw out a pet of the month. Atlas was drawn this month and we love his precious face ❤️

Congratulations to Atlas, the Red Barn Pet Resort Pet of the Month! He has a way of bringing joy to everyone he meets. He gives the best hugs, love water, and to play ball!

🐾 NOW HIRING: Kennel Techs — Red Barn Pet Resort

We've got two spots open at Red Barn Pet Resort in Charleston, TN — same role, different schedules. Pick the one that fits your life.

This is hands-on, active work. We hike, walk, play ball, and rough-house with dogs of every temperament, rain or shine, heat or cold. We're not a traditional daycare and we're not dog trainers — we're a boarding facility that runs on a tight routine but feels like "grandma's house" for our guests.

What you need (both positions):
🐾 Kennel tech experience preferred — no experience? Let's talk
🐾 Calm, steady demeanor and the ability to handle all kinds of temperaments
🐾 Strong attention to detail and ability to follow directives closely
🐾 Comfortable outdoors in any weather, and with hands-on care, cleaning, and the occasional scratch or bruise
🐾 A genuine love of dogs

Choose your schedule:

Position 1 — Weekday, part-time
Mostly daytime hours, typically 7/7:30–12 or 7/7:30–5 (with a two-hour break for a full day). Schedule and hours vary week to week. Some weekends when needed.

Position 2 — Weekend only
Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Shifts may include 7–7 (with a two-hour break), 7–12, or 2–8. Holidays required.

Pay: Based on experience — front desk, computer, or social media skills are a bonus we factor in.

You'll leave tired, dirty, and fulfilled. During January and February, there may be weeks with no hours. Do not apply if you require a consistent specific salary. Unfortunately, dog boarding does not have that luxury.

Happy Monday!!!

School starts back soon. Which means we go from summer vacays to weekend ball games, breaks, and holidays. Based off of how the summer has been, please book early. Weekends are filling up fast. Fall break, Thanksgiving, and Christmas is already booking.

Public service announcement.

Just like with extreme cold, most of the same precautions need to take place with extreme heat.

Asphalt can reach 130 degrees under the sun, quick, fast, and in a hurry. That means, walks on the greenway or down the road are more harmful in this heat, than productive.

Please bring your dogs in the cool, provide shade, provide lots of fresh cool water, provide shelter. Fans. Cooling mats. Pools.

If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.
