🌟 Tech Week Spotlight 🌟

Meet Mae R!

Mae was born and raised in Summerville, South Carolina, and has spent his career exploring different areas of veterinary medicine. He’s worked in general practice, shelter medicine, animal control, and specialty medicine, and now brings all of that experience to the fast-paced world of emergency medicine.

Before joining CVRC full-time, Mae picked up relief shifts with the team and quickly realized how much he loved being there. Between the people, the atmosphere, and getting to work alongside others who share his love for animals, it just felt like the right place to call home!
Mae knows how scary and overwhelming it can be to have a sick or injured pet, especially in an emergency. He understands how much trust it takes to put your pet in someone else’s hands, and he takes that responsibility to heart. He treats every patient like one of his own, making sure they get the same love, patience, and care he would want for his own pets.
Outside of work, Mae is a huge pug lover and a big fan of all things zombie-related. He has a special place in his heart for those wrinkly little faces, and when it comes to zombie movies and shows, he’s always up for a good one!

🌟 Tech Week Spotlight 🌟

Meet Brittany B!

Brittany’s passion for animals and even the smallest of creatures began in childhood. Growing up, she loved helping her dad care for the family pets and had the opportunity to be around a variety of animals, including lizards, fish, turtles, rabbits, ferrets, and snakes. Even playing with caterpillars during recess reflected Brittany’s deep connection to nature.

Brittany began her veterinary career as a kennel technician before getting the opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience in animal medicine. This opened up a whole new world of care and compassion, inspiring her to become a voice for the voiceless. Over the past 11 years, Brittany has dedicated herself to veterinary medicine, pursuing continuing education and college coursework to grow as a veterinary technician. She loves being able to care for animals, especially during their most difficult moments, and wouldn’t trade it for the world! Outside of work, Brittany enjoys spending time in nature, reading, and learning new things.

Meet Abbie Harms, LVT!

Abbie has been in veterinary medicine since 2013, starting as a kennel assistant while attending tech school and working her way up from there. After graduating from Globe University in 2015, Abbie began her career in emergency and critical care, where her passion has always been. She has been a licensed veterinary technician for nearly 10 years.

Fun fact: Abbie was a member of the state choir in high school and was nominated for the National Choir from the state of Illinois!

🌟 Tech Week Spotlight 🌟

Steph H., LVT

Steph earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in psychology before changing gears and earning an AAS in Veterinary Technology from Ogeechee Technical College in 2017. She has maintained a veterinary technician license ever since. Steph began her career in a general practice setting before transitioning to emergency medicine, where she discovered a love for working the night shift. After moving to Charleston in 2022, she worked in both general practice and overnight ER/ICU settings.

Most recently, Steph transitioned to a full-time position at The Animal Forest Zoo, located inside Charles Towne Landing State Park, as the on-staff Licensed Veterinary Technician and Assistant Curator. In this role, she communicates concerns to the veterinarian, assists with sedation and treatments, and advocates for the animals in the zoo’s care. Steph still works Sunday nights in the ICU at CVRC for an adrenaline rush and to keep her technician skills sharp!

🕯️🐾 Honoring the Pets Who Live Forever in Our Hearts 🐾🕯️

As Día de los Mu***os (Day of the Dead) approaches, we’re preparing our Día de los Mu***os Pet Memorial at CVRC to honor and remember the beloved pets who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. ❤️

Día de los Mu***os is a Mexican tradition that celebrates the lives of loved ones who have passed, honoring their memories with photos, candles, flowers, and meaningful offerings.

The memorial pictured in this post is from last year, and we’re excited to create another special space to honor the pets who will always hold a place in our hearts.

When Cobra needed an emergency C-section, our team jumped into action to help welcome her puppies into the world. Eight little ones made it through delivery and received some extra TLC from our emergency, surgery, and neonatal teams!

We’re so proud of our team’s collaboration and care for Cobra and her puppies during this special moment. Sending this sweet family lots of love as they begin their next chapter together! 🐶💗

🎉 Another VTS to Celebrate at CVRC! 🎉

We’re excited to celebrate Heather Oliver, LVT, VTS(ECC) on earning her VTS and being officially pinned by Kendall Bak, LVT, VTS(ECC) at her VTS pinning ceremony! 💙🐾

A Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) is a credentialed veterinary technician who has pursued advanced education, training, and experience to become certified in a specific area of veterinary medicine. Much like veterinary specialties, this additional certification allows technicians to develop an even deeper level of expertise within their field.

With Heather’s achievement, CVRC now has 6 Veterinary Technician Specialists (5 in Emergency/Critical Care and 1 in Internal Medicine) on our team! And we’re not stopping there; 4 more of our talented veterinary technicians are currently working toward obtaining their VTS certifications. 🎓✨

We’re incredibly proud of the dedication, hard work, and continued learning that goes into earning this distinction. Congratulations, Heather! We can’t wait to see where your VTS journey takes you! 🐾👏

🐾 Happy National Walk Your Dog Week! 🐾

October 1st-7th

There’s nothing quite like a good walk with your best friend! Whether it’s a stroll around the neighborhood, a hike somewhere new, or an adventure to a favorite walking spot, walks are about so much more than just getting those steps in. 🐶💕

A few walking essentials to keep in mind:
🦮 Bring the basics: A secure leash and collar or harness, waste bags, water, and a portable bowl are great to have on hand, especially for longer adventures.

👃 Let them sniff! Sniffing is a big part of how dogs experience the world. Giving your dog time to stop and investigate all those interesting smells provides mental stimulation and enrichment, so don’t feel like every walk has to be a race around the block!

🌳 Take the scenic route: Exploring new places and letting your dog experience different sights, sounds, and smells can turn an ordinary walk into a fun adventure.

❤️ Make it quality time: Walks are a great way to support your dog’s physical health while giving you both an opportunity to spend time together.

So grab the leash, lace up your shoes, and let the adventures begin! And remember, sometimes the best part of the walk is simply letting your dog stop and smell the roses... or the fire hydrants. 😉🐾

🖤 Celebrating National Black Dog Day with Boozer! 🖤

This National Black Dog Day, we’re celebrating one very special black Lab who has certainly kept our team on their toes!

Boozer, a 10-year-old Labrador Retriever, recently came to CVRC as an emergency transfer after developing a serious abdominal infection. What started with vomiting quickly turned into a much more serious situation, requiring emergency surgery and an extended stay in the hospital.

Boozer’s road to recovery was anything but simple. After his initial surgery, he developed complications that required another surgery, along with a prolonged period of hospitalization and close monitoring. One of his biggest hurdles was getting his stomach and digestive system back to normal.

But through it all, Boozer continued to show everyone exactly what kind of dog he is. Even on the tougher days, his sweet personality and famous tail wags were never far away. As he started feeling better, our team watched him slowly become more and more like himself again. Before long, he was eating, walking around, greeting his family, and earning descriptions like “bright,” “happy,” and “energetic.” One team member even called him his usual “social butterfly.” 🥰

After spending nearly two weeks in the hospital, Boozer was finally ready to head home! His incision had healed, his sutures were removed, and he was tolerating his special liquid diet well. Most importantly, our team was thrilled to see this sweet boy back to being himself.

Boozer’s recovery was a true team effort involving Emergency and Critical Care, Surgery, and the many nurses and support staff who cared for him around the clock. His case reminded us just how much patience, teamwork, and a whole lot of love can mean for a patient facing a long road back to feeling like themselves.

Happy National Black Dog Day, Boozer! We’re so happy you’re home. 🖤🐾

💙 Celebrating Dr. Jesty & Looking Ahead at CVRC 💙

After 11 incredible years at CVRC, we have some bittersweet news to share. Dr. Sophy Jesty will be beginning a new chapter with her family as they prepare to move to Argentina later this year.

For more than a decade, Dr. Jesty has been an incredibly important part of CVRC, our Cardiology team, and the veterinary community in Charleston. For the past 8 years, she has also served as our Medical Director. She has been a trusted colleague, mentor, friend, and dedicated advocate for the patients and families she has cared for throughout the years. Her impact on our hospital and our community will be felt long after her departure.

We are fortunate to have Dr. Rebecca Saunders continuing to lead our Cardiology department. Dr. Saunders has been part of the CVRC team since 2022 and will continue providing the exceptional cardiology care our patients and referring veterinarians know and trust.

We are also excited to welcome Dr. Alyx Tracy as CVRC’s new Medical Director! Dr. Tracy has been an integral part of CVRC since 2021 and has served in leadership for several years. Her experience, dedication, and passion for veterinary medicine will help guide CVRC into this next chapter.

Saying goodbye to someone who has been such an important part of our CVRC family is never easy. We are incredibly grateful for everything Dr. Jesty has given to CVRC over the past 11 years, and we will be cheering her and her family on as they begin this exciting new adventure.

Thank you, Dr. Jesty, for 11 years of dedication, compassion, friendship, and exceptional care. You will be deeply missed by all of us at CVRC and by the Charleston veterinary community. We wish you and your family nothing but happiness in this next chapter! 💙🐾
Our Cardiology team remains here for you and your pets with Dr. Saunders leading the department, and with Dr. Tracy stepping into the role of Medical Director, we are excited for all that is ahead for CVRC.
