☔️ RAINY DAY = CANCELLED LESSON?
✴️👉Not around here. 🐴🍂

Happy fall from Black Hawk! 🧡💙

One of our biggest goals is teaching our students that horsemanship is SO much more than riding. Some of the most valuable lessons happen with both feet on the ground!

This week’s rainy-day lesson plans include:

🧠 Equine anatomy — learning the parts of the horse, where they’re located, and why they matter.

🔎 Barn scavenger hunts for our littles — finding different tools around the farm, learning what they’re called, and actually getting to use them!

Rain or shine, there’s always something to learn around the barn. And sometimes the rainy days end up being the most fun. ☔️🐴

🍁 FALL ENROLLMENT IS OPEN! 🍁

If you’ve been thinking about getting your little one involved with horses — or maybe you’ve always wanted to learn yourself — this is a great time to join us!

We still have a few fall lesson spots available for:

🤠 Little Wranglers — ages 2–8
🐴 Adult Horsemanship — unmounted, hands-on learning

Come spend your fall at the barn with us! 🍂🐴 Spots are limited, so reach out today to learn more and reserve yours.

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery… and honestly, one of the best compliments I could ever receive is hearing that one of my students looks up to me or wants to be like me someday. 🥹🤎

Not because I want them to follow my exact path—but because it means something I’m doing is inspiring them to love horses, work hard, keep learning and dream a little bigger. 🐴✨

I’m so thankful that I get to teach, encourage and watch my students grow into confident, capable horsewomen. And truthfully, I hope every one of them ends up even better than me. 🫶🏼

Being a horse trainer and riding instructor is pretty special—but getting to be someone they look up to is something I’ll never take for granted. 🤠💙

🚨 THE HORSE FINALLY STOOD STILL—BUT DID THEY ACTUALLY LEARN ANYTHING?

2/6 🐴 Desensitization vs. Flooding — Where Is the Line?

A flag is waved. A tarp is dragged. A rope is tossed across a horse’s back.

The horse reacts. The pressure continues. Eventually, they stop moving.

From the outside, it looks successful.

But did the horse learn that the object was safe—or did they simply become too overwhelmed to keep responding?

🧠 Desensitization should be a learning process, not an endurance test.

Horses naturally investigate unfamiliar things through approach and retreat. They may look, move away, circle back, smell and gradually move closer once they realize there is no threat.

Good desensitization works with that natural process.

Introduce the object at a level the horse can process. Allow them to look, move and think. Soften or retreat when they offer curiosity, relaxation or a thoughtful response—then gradually approach again.

The horse begins to learn:

“I noticed it. I investigated it. Nothing hurt me. I can handle it.”

Flooding removes that conversation.

The horse is exposed to more pressure than they can mentally process, without a clear way to find relief, until they eventually stop reacting.

⚖️ But here’s where it gets complicated: discomfort does not automatically equal flooding.

A horse may raise their head, move their feet, snort or try to leave when something is unfamiliar. That doesn’t necessarily mean the trainer is doing something wrong.

The reaction isn’t the only thing we should be watching.

Can the horse still think?
Is the trainer adjusting when needed?
Is there a clear path to the release?
Is the horse becoming more confident—or simply more exhausted?

Removing everything the second a horse reacts can teach them that panic makes pressure disappear.

Continuing at full intensity while they spiral can overwhelm them completely.

Good horsemanship lives somewhere between those two extremes.

💙🧡 I don’t want a horse who tolerates frightening things because they believe they have no choice.

I want a horse who can notice something unfamiliar, investigate it, seek guidance and find their way back to relaxation.

Desensitization shouldn’t take away the horse’s voice.

It should give them better answers. 🐴

👇 Where do you believe desensitization ends and flooding begins? Is it determined by the method—or by the horse’s response?

Horse training • equine behavior • desensitization versus flooding • approach and retreat • pressure and release • horse body language • equine learning theory • groundwork exercises • confidence building • fear responses in horses • ethical horsemanship • Western horse training • helping reactive horses • training young horses

🤪 MAYBE BEING A LITTLE INSANE IS WHAT GETS YOU THERE…

We may not be where we want to be yet—but that doesn’t mean we aren’t getting closer. 👏🏼

The goal is simple:

🌱 Keep growing.
📚 Keep learning.
🔥 Keep showing up.
📈 Get just 1% better every day.

Those tiny improvements may not feel life-changing in the moment—but over time, they become something massive.

✨ Dream big. Then dream even bigger than you think you can reach.

Believe in it. Speak it into existence. Then work twice as hard to make it happen.

Because manifestation matters—but so does showing up on the hard days, the slow days and the days when nobody is watching. 💪🏼

Huge things are ahead for Black Hawk Equine, but the journey matters just as much as the destination. 🖤🐴

Keep going. Keep learning. Keep believing.

You’re probably capable of far more than you realize. 🧡💙

🏇 AND WE’RE BACK! 🏇

Friday night we traded the barn for the racetrack and headed to the Charles Town Classic at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races — our very first Classic, and it definitely won’t be our last! 🤩🐎

There’s nothing quite like a night at the races. The horses, the atmosphere, the excitement when they come flying down the stretch… it’s hard not to love every second of it. ✨

We had an absolute blast experiencing one of the biggest nights of racing at Charles Town and already can’t wait to go back. 🧡💙

Who else loves a good night at the track?! 🏇👇

It was never about being the biggest name in the industry.

I’m not here to get famous. I don’t need everyone to know my name, recognize my face, or know what I’ve accomplished.

Because at the end of the day, it was always about the horses. 🐴🧡💙

My dream is to become the kind of horseman who can meet any horse where they are—and figure out how to get through to them.

The difficult ones. The misunderstood ones. The young ones who don’t know the answers yet. The ones who just need someone willing to slow down, listen, and try something different.

I want to help every horse I work with become more confident, capable, willing, and understood. Not by forcing them into a mold, but by learning how to communicate in a way that makes sense to that horse.

And somewhere along the way, I realized helping the horse is only half of it.

I want to help the people on the other end of the lead rope, too.

To educate owners and equestrians so they understand the why behind what their horse is doing. To teach better timing, clearer communication, more patience, and stronger foundations—so the horse continues to benefit long after they leave my hands.

I don’t care if my name is ever the biggest one in this industry.

If I can spend my life becoming a better horseman, getting through to the horses that need it, and passing what I learn on to people who genuinely want to do better by their horses…

That’s success to me.

Not fame. Not recognition.

Just better horses, better horsemen, and a lifetime spent learning from both. 🐴🧡💙

💰🐴 “OKAY… BUT HOW MUCH?”

It might be one of the most talked-about questions in the horse industry.

Whether you’re looking for a trainer, riding instructor, vet, farrier, chiropractor, bodyworker, hauler—or just about any other equine professional—the conversation eventually gets to:

“How much?”

And we get it.

At Black Hawk Equine, we’re not trying to hide our prices behind a “PM us for pricing.”

We want to be upfront about what we charge. But we also want people to understand what they’re actually paying for. 🧡💙

We want our services to remain attainable for as many people as possible. We never intentionally want to price someone out.

But we also believe in charging fairly for the time, knowledge, experience, care, and expenses that go into providing a quality service.

Because right behind “How much?” is usually another question:

🤔 “Why does it cost so much?”

Think about a riding lesson.

You’re not just paying for an hour in the arena.

You’re paying for the years your instructor spent riding, learning, practicing, making mistakes, continuing their education, working under other professionals, and gaining the experience necessary to safely and effectively teach you.

Then there are the things you don’t see.

Insurance.
State licensing.
Barn and arena upkeep.
Equipment and tack.
Fuel to travel to you.

And if they provide the lesson horse?

Hay. Feed. Bedding. Farrier. Vet care. Maintenance. Tack. And the countless hours spent keeping that horse healthy, trained, and safe enough to teach riders. 🐴

Training is an even better example.

Sometimes people see a 30-day training program priced at $1,000+ and immediately think:

😳 “That’s expensive.”

But let’s actually break it down.

Properly feeding and housing one horse can easily cost $400+ per month in today’s market—and the trainer hasn’t even trained the horse yet.

Now let’s say that horse gets around 26 training sessions that month.

On a $1,000 training fee, after just that $400 in basic horse-care expenses, you’re down to roughly $23 per session.

And we still haven’t paid for:

Insurance. Facility expenses. Utilities. Equipment. Labor. Taxes. Administrative work. Owner communication. Maintenance. Or the trainer’s actual education and experience.

Once ALL of the overhead is accounted for?

That trainer may realistically be pocketing only a few dollars from some of those rides.

So when $1,000+ scares potential clients away…

Professionals shouldn’t automatically lower their prices.

Because you’re not just paying for the 30 minutes, hour, ride, adjustment, trim, haul, or appointment you physically see.

You’re paying for everything it took to make that service possible.

🐴🧡💙

We understand horses aren’t a cheap hobby.

We also understand that not everyone has an unlimited horse budget—and we genuinely want to keep what we offer as attainable as we reasonably can.

But affordability shouldn’t have to come at the expense of quality care, education, safety, or good horsemanship.

So instead of hiding our numbers…

Here are ours. 👀👇

We’re upfront about what we charge, what you’re getting, and the value behind it.

Now we’re curious what the rest of the horse world thinks:

💬 Professionals—what are YOU charging these days?

💬 Horse owners—do our prices feel fair for what you’re getting?

And most importantly… 👀

Would you hire us? Why or why not?

Some people leave behind songs. Some leave behind stories. Dolly Parton gave us a little bit of both — and a whole lot of wisdom. 🦋🤍

She taught us to stay soft without being weak, to laugh through the hard days, to work for what we want, and to never be afraid of dreaming a little bigger. 🦋

And maybe that’s why so much of what she gave us feels at home in the horse world. 🐴✨

Because horses will humble you, heal you, test you, and teach you to keep showing up. They’ll remind you that “if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” 🌈🦋

Here’s to big dreams, good horses, muddy boots, hard work, and a little Dolly playing in the barn. 🧡💙🦋

My favorite color? Whatever color God decides to make the sky that day. 🌅🐴

Some days I have to remind myself just how privileged we are—to wake up, walk into a barn full of horses we love, and call this work.

To spend our days covered in dust and horse hair, watching the sun rise and set from the saddle, learning from these animals, and building a life beneath God’s sky. 💙🧡

It isn’t always easy, but I’ll never stop being grateful that this gets to be our life. 🤍

There’s just something about Jimmy the Kid. 🥹🐴🧡💙

Our 2018 OTTB gelding spent a whole lot of his life proving himself on the racetrack — 66 starts, 5 wins, 7 seconds, 14 thirds and over $141,000 earned.

But as proud as we are of everything he did before us, it’s the horse underneath those stats that we’ve completely fallen in love with.

Jimmy is sweet, ridiculously smart, kind, willing, and one of those horses who genuinely tries SO hard to figure out what you’re asking. He wants to get it right. He wants to be your friend. And somehow, after everything he’s experienced, he still approaches people and new things with so much heart. 🥹

He’s quickly become one of those horses that reminds us exactly why we love Thoroughbreds so much. He gave everything he had during his racing career, and now he’s putting that same work ethic into learning an entirely different life.

And for all his accomplishments… Jimmy’s greatest passion may actually be finding a human who can scratch that one VERY specific spot just right. 😂 Once you find it, congratulations — you’re officially his employee.

We absolutely adore this horse. Jimmy the Kid, Jimothy, Jimmy… whatever you call him, he’s pretty special around here. 🐴🧡💙
