Dog Collars:
Flat Collar - Martingale - Choker - Pinch (Prong) - Electronic
Remember, harnesses are for pulling not control.
First and foremost, the dog tells me what collar is required for control. Before beginning training, I evaluate the dog's temperament, (genetic characteristics). This includes stress level, confidence, pain tolerance, food motivation, retrieve drive and aggression level.

In our puppy class (dogs 4 mon. and younger) I start off with the flat collar, then progress from there if necessary. Note: To anyone who believes that chokers, prong or electronic collars are inhumane, you simply don't know the proper way to use them. I've been doing this for 52 years and I've never 'harmed' a dog and never will.

Electronic Collars: Great for distance control, recall, and interest to other animals. Note: Get the correct collar. I recommend the Sport Dog 424 SD. It is very reliable, inexpensive (120 or so) and has a dial with 21 stimulation levels. I don't like LED readout collars.
