This morning Theodore and I depart to head to Muscatatuck Urban Training Center (MUTC) to work on our skills in land human remains detection.
⠀
This is Theodore’s first big seminar, with his prior training having been in our local community, with K9 Phoebe, Ranger, Knox, and Soldier, with Ohio Branch K9 Search Team, and at Owen’s Center for Emergency Preparedness.
⠀
Our main focal points for this seminar are to get new environmental exposure, new source exposure, and gain insight on operational skills for proofing our work as a team. We are working on furthering independent searching through more complicated problems, specifically elevated and blown/collected odor scenarios.
⠀
While we are away please allow at least 48 hrs for response times to all inquiries.
⠀
Safe travels to all those heading to the seminar this weekend!

We wanted to really congratulate Maggie and her dad for how far they have come with their training!
⠀
I originally met Maggie, her brother Moose, and their parents while training outside of the dog park. They noted how good the dog I had was doing and asked how they could get their dogs to stop being so reactive.
⠀
Well, we met, said no to dog parks, set up a strong training plan, and began proofing each dog around other dogs, with the goal of walking them both without reacting. This is how our training journey is looking!
⠀
Walks don’t need to be stressful and full of worry about where the next trigger is coming from. If you have a Maggie of your own in need of some help, let’s get you both out on a better path to success.

Did you know that Theodore acts as Grand River K-9’s demonstration dog in addition to his job as a SAR HRD K9?

We joke that he has to earn his keep around here somehow, because all his extra yummies and supplements aren’t cheap! The current estimate for raising and training a SAR K-9 is about $60k when it comes to training, feed, travel, seminars, and supplies.
⠀
Theodore has much to learn himself, at only 8 months old, but he is a huge help to my client dogs! I can feel confident throwing him into any lesson I have with a client and know that he will do well.
⠀
To be a demo dog Theo must be:
• Neutral to all dogs, all sizes, and all types of reactivity.
• Obedient on and off leash
• Confident and unwavering, this helps other dogs gain confidence!

It does also help that he hasn’t met a human or dog he hasn’t loved yet. Don’t worry, he does get breaks from work to play with his select dog friends and enjoy being a dog!

It has taken a few weeks with Enzo to build confidence around other dogs through carefully applied training, but this right here shows it has paid off. Advocate for your fearful dog.

The greatest reward to a trainer is seeing a dog who used to once go off the rails at the sight of other dogs 200 feet away to being able to be calm, focused, and obedient as dozens of dogs run and walk by them.
⠀
Enzo will continue to gain confidence and neutrality while also working on building stronger handler focus and eventually several service dog tasks. He has already begun to do public access work and light concepts of deep pressure therapy as well as positioning for mobility down the road.

Nervousness is not best handled with obedience. Confidence can only come from the proper engagement, directioning, leadership, trust, and guidance. Nervous dogs need built up, shown it’s safe, and that scary things are fun.
